One hundred eighty desks, not fourteen and not fifty-six

The Georgia House of Representatives is the lower house of the Georgia General Assembly. One hundred eighty Representatives. Article III, Section II, Paragraph I of the Georgia Constitution: the House shall consist of not fewer than one hundred eighty Representatives apportioned among representative districts. Current law fills one hundred eighty. Confirm the live count and the member of record on legis.ga.gov — House and house.ga.gov.

The term is two years. Georgia does not stagger this chamber. All one hundred eighty seats stand every even year. The next regular election is Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Members serve until the next General Assembly convenes (Article III, Section II, Paragraph V). The House and the Senate organize each odd-numbered year on the second Monday in January (Article III, Section IV, Paragraph I). After 3 November 2026, that Monday is 11 January 2027. That is Georgia’s clock. It is not midnight of election day. It is not December 1. It is not Alabama.

This is not a United States House seat. Georgia sends fourteen Representatives to Congress on a two-year clock. Those files live under U.S. House. This chamber does not vote in Congress, does not sit in Washington, and does not split a federal district. A State House district is the grocery-sized unit — on the order of fifty-four thousand people on 2020 census math — and still is not a congressional map.

This is not the Georgia State Senate. Fifty-six desks is a different house, also two years, also all up in 2026. This is not the Governor. This is not the Attorney General. This is not a Mayor.

Atlanta is the capital, on Capitol Square in Fulton County, on the piedmont. Atlanta is also the largest city. That coincidence is not a license to treat metro Atlanta as the whole state. Savannah is the oldest city and a port. It is not the capital. Augusta, Columbus, Macon, Albany, the Blue Ridge, and a south-Georgia farm county hire this chamber — one hundred eighty districts, not one skyline.

Georgia is one hundred fifty-nine counties. A State House district is not the whole state. Seat packets, when they ship, teach this district. This page teaches the chamber.

The House elects its own Speaker at the beginning of each two-year General Assembly. The Lieutenant Governor is President of the Senate. That gavel is not this floor. Do not treat a news comment as the roster. Confirm officers on house.ga.gov.

A Representative has two homes. Capitol Square for the session. The district for the people who hired the seat. Staff who only know Peachtree, or only know River Street as the state, or only know a mountain overlook as Georgia, are not doing the job. The Mayor of Atlanta is a different office (Mayor of Atlanta). Savannah’s Mayor is a different office still.

Money and the appropriation both start on this floor

Georgia writes state law in two houses. A bill that is not passed by this House is not Georgia law. The Governor signs or vetoes; the General Assembly can override where the constitution actually gives it.

Article III, Section V, Paragraph III is this chamber’s hinge: all bills for raising revenue, or appropriating money, shall originate in the House of Representatives. That is both the tax bill and the spending bill. Do not transplant a state that starts only revenue here and lets appropriations walk in from the Senate. Do not transplant Florida’s either-house start. Confirm the current text. This page is teaching, not a drafting manual.

The regular session meets on the second Monday in January and may run no longer than forty days in the aggregate each year (Article III, Section IV, Paragraph I). A missed legislative day is a real cost. Georgia is not a full-time legislature. The 2026 regular session adjourned 2 April 2026. November is the hire for the next two years, not a re-run of that forty-day clock.

Qualifications sit in Article III, Section II, Paragraph III: a Representative at least twenty-one, a citizen of the United States, a resident of Georgia for two years, and of the district for one year immediately preceding the election. Always verify the current text. There are no legislative term limits in Georgia. Consecutive-term caps that apply to the Governor are not this desk.

Vacancies are a Governor’s writ of election (Article III, Section IV, Paragraph V; O.C.G.A. § 21-2-544). If the vacancy falls during a session, the writ issues within ten days; the special sits thirty to sixty days after. Do not invent a party-committee holdover. Confirm on the Secretary of State.

The House is the judge of the election, returns, and qualifications of its own members. That is not a campaign objection on social media.

legis.ga.gov and a majority runoff

The official legislative door is legis.ga.gov and house.ga.gov. Bills, amendments, committee notices, today’s schedule, and the member of record belong there — not on a forwarded image. Session calendars and the Clerk’s notices are posted on those sites.

The official election door is the Georgia Secretary of State. Registration, ballot status, and the sample ballot belong on My Voter Page and the county elections superintendent in this county — one hundred fifty-nine of them.

Staff who only know a Facebook page are not doing the job. A constituent who was told “you can vote by text” was not told the truth until a .gov page says otherwise.

Georgia runs a majority general. If no candidate takes more than half, a general runoff is on the calendar — 1 December 2026 this cycle. Teach that clock on the Secretary of State. Do not import another state’s plurality or a top-two card. Do not import Alabama’s four-year House.

Redistricting is legislative work under this constitution. Maps get litigated. Treat a court order and a stay as clocks. Confirm which map a given election actually used on the Secretary of State and the courts — not on a thread.

The House presents; the Senate tries

Article III, Section VII: the House of Representatives has the sole power to vote impeachment charges. The Senate tries. Conviction takes two-thirds of the Senators. That split is Georgia. It is not a trial in superior court. It is not the Attorney General’s docket (Attorney General of Georgia). Do not teach a federal impeachment as this file. Do not teach Alaska’s reverse as this file.

Equal protection on this map is not an Atlanta-only file. A Black Belt county, a mountain precinct, a Wiregrass farm, and a barrier-island town hire the same Constitution. A district that never makes a Peachtree broadcast still sits in this chamber. The U.S. Attorney and a superior-court judge are not this Representative.

Each house judges its own members. Expulsion is this constitution, not a comment section.

A peach freeze is not a pulpit

Care this office actually gives is a bill and an appropriation, not a church. Do not invent a ministry. A hurricane night on the coast that is not a Capitol Square press conference, a freeze on a peach county, a tornado in the piedmont, a drought on south-Georgia ground — those land as Ways and Means hours, emergency statutes, and questions to agencies the Governor runs.

Rural hospitals, a state prison, Medicaid as state policy, a National Guard year in state status: the House does not command the Guard (the Governor does). It writes and oversees the statutes those desks live under. Chaplaincy that exists in a prison or a Guard unit is that department’s staffing. It is not this page’s pulpit. The gold geometry on this cover is civic grammar. It is not a parish substituting for the General Assembly.

Legislative Counsel and a forty-day intern

The Legislature’s own shops — the Office of Legislative Counsel, fiscal notes, bill drafting — are how the work is actually learned. Page and intern openings belong on official legislative and university civic pages, not on a campaign site. A student who wants the civic path confirms those doors on .gov and campus postings.

Ways and Means is how a student learns a money bill that must start here. The Clerk’s office is how a student learns a forty-day calendar. County elections superintendents and the Secretary of State’s Elections Division are how election work is learned. Fulton is a county. It is not this chamber. A law-school clinic that files in Atlanta still files in a court, not in a House committee.

Forty days, a hurricane track, and a freeze warning

Census and reapportionment. A forty-day legislative-day clock that actually runs out. A hurricane track in the Atlantic. A freeze warning on a peach orchard. A drought report from a south-Georgia extension office. Committee attendance. A revenue-or-appropriation bill that cannot start in the Senate. Dockets that a bill would actually change. An adjourned 2026 regular session already on the books — the November hire is the next two years, not a re-run of April.

That is situational awareness for this chamber. It is not spy fiction. It is not a Mayor’s night radio. It is not the Attorney General’s case map. It is not a U.S. House whip count.

One hundred fifty-nine counties hire this floor

Florida is a different state. Alabama is a different state. Tennessee is a different state. North Carolina is a different state. South Carolina is a different state. Columbus looks west and remains Georgia. Augusta looks north and remains Georgia.
