The Georgia State Senate is the upper house of the Georgia General Assembly. Fifty-six Senators. Article III, Section II, Paragraph I of the Georgia Constitution caps this chamber at not more than fifty-six members. Current law fills all fifty-six. The General Assembly’s own door at senate.ga.gov is the roster of record.
The term is two years. Georgia does not stagger this chamber. All fifty-six seats stand every even year. The next regular election is Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Winners take office the second Monday in January — the same hour the General Assembly convenes (Article III, Section IV, Paragraph I). That is Georgia’s clock. It is not midnight of election day. It is not December 1. It is not Alabama.
This is not a United States Senate seat. The federal files live at Georgia Class II and Georgia Class III. Class II is on 3 November 2026. That is a different desk. This chamber does not vote in Congress, does not confirm federal judges, and does not sit in Washington.
This is not the Georgia House of Representatives. One hundred eighty desks is a different house, also on a two-year clock, also all up in 2026. This is not the Governor. This is not the Attorney General. This is not a Mayor.
Atlanta is the capital, on Capitol Square in Fulton County, on the piedmont. Atlanta is also the largest city. That coincidence is not a license to treat metro Atlanta as the whole state. Savannah is the oldest city and a port. It is not the capital. Augusta, Columbus, Macon, Albany, the Blue Ridge, and a south-Georgia farm county hire this chamber — fifty-six districts, not one skyline.

Two years and a forty-day session
Article III, Section II, Paragraph V: members of the General Assembly are elected for two years and serve until the next General Assembly convenes. The Senate and the House organize each odd-numbered year. A two-year General Assembly is a clock, not a slogan.
The regular session meets on the second Monday in January and may run no longer than forty days in the aggregate each year. A missed legislative day is a real cost. Georgia is not a full-time legislature. Two homes still apply: Capitol Square for the session. The district for the people who hired the seat.
There are no legislative term limits in Georgia. Consecutive-term caps that apply to the Governor are not this desk.
Qualifications sit in Article III, Section II, Paragraph III: a Senator at least twenty-five, a citizen of the United States, a resident of Georgia for two years, and of the district for one year immediately preceding the election. The Lieutenant Governor holds this gavel
Article V, Section I, Paragraph III: the Lieutenant Governor shall be the President of the Senate. That is Georgia’s clock, not Colorado’s and not Hawaii’s. The Senate elects a President Pro Tempore from its members. The working day, when the Lieutenant Governor is elsewhere, runs under that gavel. Standing committees — Rules; Appropriations; Finance; Judiciary; Education and Youth; Natural Resources and the Environment; Public Safety — are how the work is actually cut. A Senator has two homes. The gold dome for the session. The district for the people who hired the seat. Staff who only know Peachtree, or only know River Street as the state, or only know a mountain overlook as Georgia, are not doing the job. Capitol Square is the capitol. The Mayor of Atlanta is a different office (Mayor of Atlanta). Savannah’s Mayor is a different office still.
Vacancies are filled by special election as statute actually provides. Do not invent a holdover. Confirm on the Secretary of State.
legis.ga.gov is the record, not a rumor
The official legislative door is senate.ga.gov and legis.ga.gov. Bills, amendments, committee notices, and the member of record belong there — not on a forwarded screenshot. Session calendars and today’s schedule are posted on those sites.
The official election door is the Georgia Secretary of State. Registration, ballot status, and the sample ballot belong on My Voter Page and the county elections superintendent in this county — one hundred fifty-nine of them.
Staff who only know a Facebook page are not doing the job. A constituent who was told “you can vote by text” was not told the truth until a .gov page says otherwise.
Georgia runs a majority general. If no candidate takes more than half, a general runoff is on the calendar — 1 December 2026 this cycle. Teach that clock on the Secretary of State. Do not import another state’s plurality or a top-two card.
Redistricting is legislative work under this constitution. Maps get litigated. Treat a court order and a stay as clocks. Confirm which map a given election actually used on the Secretary of State and the courts — not on a thread.
Confirmations that never leave Georgia
A confirmation hearing is this chamber’s justice minute: an appointee the Governor named, a board that will actually touch a license, a prison, a river, or a school. It is not a trial. It is not a U.S. Senate hearing. The Attorney General is the state’s lawyer (Attorney General of Georgia). The Senate is not that office.
Equal protection on this map is not an Atlanta-only file. A Black Belt county, a mountain precinct, a Wiregrass farm, and a barrier-island town hire the same Constitution. A district that never makes a Peachtree broadcast still sits in this chamber. The U.S. Attorney and a superior-court judge are not this Senator.
Hurricane, freeze, and a mountain county
Care this office actually gives is a bill and an oversight hour, not a church. Do not invent a ministry. A hurricane night on the coast that is not a Capitol Square press conference, a freeze on a peach county, a tornado in the piedmont, a drought on south-Georgia ground — those land as appropriations, emergency statutes, and questions to agencies the Governor runs.
Rural hospitals, a state prison, Medicaid as state policy, a National Guard year in state status: the Senate does not command the Guard (the Governor does). It writes and oversees the statutes those desks live under. Chaplaincy that exists in a prison or a Guard unit is that department’s staffing. It is not this page’s pulpit.
How a student learns on Capitol Square
The Legislature’s own shops — the Office of Legislative Counsel, fiscal notes, bill drafting — are how the work is actually learned. Page and intern openings belong on official legislative and university civic pages, not on a campaign site. A student who wants the civic path confirms those doors on .gov and campus postings.
County elections superintendents and the Secretary of State’s Elections Division are how election work is learned. Fulton is a county. It is not this chamber. A law-school clinic that files in Atlanta still files in a court, not in a Senate committee.
What a short session actually watches
Census and reapportionment. A forty-day legislative-day clock. A hurricane track in the Atlantic. A freeze warning on a peach orchard. A drought report from a south-Georgia extension office. Committee attendance. Confirmation questionnaires. Dockets that a bill would actually change.
That is situational awareness for this chamber. It is not spy fiction. It is not a Mayor’s night radio. It is not the Attorney General’s case map.
One hundred fifty-nine counties hire this chamber

The Chattahoochee, the Savannah River, the Flint, the Oconee, the Ocmulgee, and the Altamaha are this hydrology. A desert fountain is not this land. A River Street postcard is not the whole state.
Florida is a different state. Alabama is a different state. Tennessee is a different state. North Carolina is a different state. South Carolina is a different state. Columbus looks west and remains Georgia. Augusta looks north and remains Georgia.
