When an island that is also a town hires
Massachusetts sheriffs sit for six years. The Secretary of the Commonwealth lists Sheriff elections in 2028, 2034, 2040. Takes office the first Wednesday in January. All fourteen last stood in 2022.
Nantucket is not on the SOS list of five counties that elect county commissioners as a separate ballot office. Do not confuse a Town election, a select-board race, or a Cape commissioner flyer with this Sheriff hire. Do not assume 2026 for Sheriff. Franklin’s 2026 vacancy is Franklin.
Confirm the date on the Secretary of the Commonwealth. The Town Clerk on Nantucket is the local filing door.

Rights, remedy, relief, service, due process
Honest papers on Orange Street and in Sconset. Humane custody wherever this office is responsible, including people this island sent to Bourne. Remedy for a jail wrong is the office that actually holds the person, plus this Sheriff’s door, plus the courts. Relief when the boats stop is this count first. Service of process is a person at a door in Madaket in March. Due process does not wait for the Steamship. Equal protection on the whole island.
