The clock — six years, not the 2026 table
Massachusetts sheriffs sit for six years. The Secretary of the Commonwealth lists Sheriff elections in 2028, 2034, 2040. The Sheriff takes office the first Wednesday in January. All fourteen last stood in a regular cycle in 2022.
Do not assume 2026. The 2026 state ballot in Massachusetts is Governor, other constitutional officers, District Attorney, Register of Probate, County Commissioner (in the five counties that still elect them), County Treasurer (in four). It is not the regular sheriff clock. Franklin County has a 2026 vacancy election to finish a term. That exception is Franklin, not Barnstable.
County commissioners are on overlapping clocks in Barnstable (2026, 2028, 2030). That is a different office. Do not confuse a commissioner flyer with this Sheriff hire.
