This is the Cape, not a beach in Boston
Barnstable is a geographic county and one of the few Massachusetts counties whose county government is intact. The Secretary of the Commonwealth lists it as the Cape Cod Regional Government. That is not a slogan. Voters here still elect county commissioners. The Assembly of Delegates sits. The Cape Cod Commission plans. Municipal police, fire, schools, and trash remain town services in fifteen municipalities.
The fifteen towns are Barnstable, Bourne, Brewster, Chatham, Dennis, Eastham, Falmouth, Harwich, Mashpee, Orleans, Provincetown, Sandwich, Truro, Wellfleet, and Yarmouth. The Town of Barnstable uses a city form and contains Hyannis, Osterville, Centerville, Cotuit, Marstons Mills, West Barnstable, and Barnstable Village. Hyannis is not the county. Provincetown is not a village of Barnstable.
Plymouth County is west of the canal. Dukes is Martha’s Vineyard. Nantucket is its own town-county. Suffolk holds Revere Beach. Do not file a Cape paper in those counties.

Land — canal, ocean, one road on and off
The Cape Cod Canal cuts Bourne and Sandwich. The Bourne Bridge and the Sagamore Bridge are the land hinge. East of them the county is a hooked peninsula: bay side, ocean side, the Outer Cape from Eastham to Provincetown, Vineyard Sound at Falmouth, Nantucket Sound at Hyannis. Joint Base Cape Cod sits in Bourne. The Sheriff’s house of correction sits next to it. A winter storm here is a bridge closure and a drowned cellar in a cottage colony. A summer day is Route 6 and a Steamship line, not the Boston Common.
No Berkshires. No Merrimack mill. No Springfield. Worcester is a different county. Staff who write “Boston’s beach” on every Barnstable sentence are not doing the teaching.
Politics — a county that still has a government
The Secretary of the Commonwealth lists county commissioners as elected only in Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes, Norfolk, and Plymouth. Barnstable is on that list. County treasurer is not listed as an elected office in Barnstable the way it is in Bristol, Dukes, Norfolk, and Plymouth — confirm the current table on the SOS elected offices page. Commissioners run county property and the regional government. They do not run the jail. The Sheriff is a separate elected officer with a county constituency and a state appropriation.

Law, technology, education
Courts still say Barnstable. The register of deeds is still a county-titled office. Each town has its own site. capecod.gov speaks for the regional government, not for Falmouth Police. A student who wants a civic job looks at that town’s employment page, the regional government’s page, or the Sheriff’s employment page — not at a campaign site.
Justice, outreach, rights, remedy, relief, service
Crime and fire are town. Jail and civil process are the Sheriff. Prosecution is the Cape and Islands District Attorney — still another office. A resident’s rights do not change at the Eastham line. Remedy for a town police issue is that town’s professional-standards door. Remedy for a jail issue is the Sheriff’s door in Bourne. Relief in a nor’easter is mutual aid among fifteen towns plus the Commonwealth plus the canal as a closing. Service of a court paper is still a person at a door in Truro in March.
