Nantucket County, Massachusetts
Town-county island · one town is the county · not the Vineyard

Nantucket County is the Town of Nantucket. Town-county. Select board members serve as county commissioners in the New England sense. Not on the SOS list of five counties that elect commissioners as a separate ballot office. Not Dukes. Not the Cape. The Sheriff remains. Sentenced people are held in Bourne by contract with Barnstable.

Town-county, said slowly

Nantucket is a geographic county and a town. The same people, the same island, plus Tuckernuck and Muskeget. There are not fifteen Cape towns. There are not six Vineyard towns. Town meeting and the select board are the civic hinge most residents actually touch. In the New England town-county sense, select board members also serve as county commissioners. The Secretary of the Commonwealth’s elected-offices table lists county commissioners as elected only in Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes, Norfolk, and Plymouth. Nantucket is not on that five. Confirm the current table. Do not invent a separate commissioner race.

The Sheriff is still elected on this island. Town police, fire, schools, and trash are Town services. The Steamship Authority and the airport are not the county hall.

This page is Side One. The Sheriff’s job — civil process on-island, custody in Bourne by contract — is taught at Office of the Sheriff — Nantucket.

Land — one island, fog, a boat, a plane

Nantucket Sound looks at the Cape (Barnstable) and at the Vineyard (Dukes). Those are different counties. Sconset, Madaket, Surfside are villages of one town. A winter storm here is a cancelled boat and a grounded flight. A summer day is a crowd, not a second county. No canal. No mill city. No Pittsfield.

Politics — Town is the government

Unlike Bristol or Norfolk, Nantucket does not run a three-commissioner county hall on the SOS five-county model. Unlike Berkshire, it was not “abolished” into nothing; the town is the remaining government. That distinction matters. Residents deal with Town hall first. County-titled officers that still sit — Sheriff, register of deeds, register of probate — remain. Confirm on official Town and SOS pages.

Law, technology, education

Courts still say Nantucket and sit on-island. Register of deeds remains a county-titled office. The Town site speaks for most services. The Sheriff’s official site speaks for civil process. A student looks at Town employment or the Sheriff’s employment page. Year-round housing is a labor fact. Do not send a Madaket resident to an Edgartown 311.

Justice, outreach, rights, remedy, relief, service

Crime and fire are Town. Civil process is the Sheriff. Custody of sentenced people is Barnstable’s Bourne house by contract — a fact, not a merger. Prosecution is the Cape and Islands District Attorney — another office, shared as a district with the Cape and the Vineyard. Outreach that only speaks July English on Main Street is not doing January. Rights do not change at the Sconset line. Remedy for a Town police issue is the Town. Remedy for a jail issue is the office that actually holds the person, plus this Sheriff’s door. Relief when the boats stop is mutual aid plus the Commonwealth. Papers still get served in March.
