Dukes Sheriff · the arena · the Vineyard hires this desk · not Nantucket · not 2026

This is Side Two

This page is the arena for this office, this cycle. Unique teaching for the job lives on the office twin. The county as a place — County of Dukes County, six towns plus Gosnold — is taught at Dukes County.

It is not a campaign. Names belong on the official sample ballot. No crown. Off-season voters still hire this desk. July is not a second electorate.

When an island hires a Sheriff

Massachusetts sheriffs sit for six years. The Secretary of the Commonwealth lists Sheriff elections in 2028, 2034, 2040. Takes office the first Wednesday in January. All fourteen last stood in 2022.

Dukes also elects commissioners and a county treasurer on different clocks. The SOS notes overlapping commissioner terms in all but Dukes — confirm this county’s commissioner calendar on official sources. Do not assume 2026 for Sheriff. Franklin’s 2026 vacancy is Franklin.

Confirm the date on the Secretary of the Commonwealth. Town clerks on the Vineyard and in Gosnold are the local filing doors.

Sample ballot wins

Do not take names from a seasonal paper or a boat conversation.

  1. Official candidate list / sample ballot — Secretary of the Commonwealth
  2. Voter status
  3. Current Sheriff of record — official Dukes County Sheriff’s Office / Mass.gov sheriffs list
  4. Town clerks in Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, Tisbury, West Tisbury, Chilmark, Aquinnah, and Gosnold

If a site and the official sample ballot disagree, the sample ballot wins.

What you are hiring

You are hiring the Sheriff of Dukes County — small jail and house of correction on Main Street in Edgartown, court transport and security, civil process for six Vineyard towns plus Gosnold. You are not hiring a town police chief. You are not hiring the Nantucket Sheriff. You are not hiring the Barnstable Sheriff. You are not hiring the Steamship Authority. Read the office page first.

Rights, remedy, relief, service, due process

Humane custody in a small house is still custody. Honest papers, including up-island and Cuttyhunk. Honest night count. Remedy for a jail wrong is the office’s official complaint door and the courts. Relief when the boats stop is this count first. Service of process is a person at a door in Chilmark in March. Due process does not wait for the Steamship. Equal protection from Aquinnah to Edgartown.
