Montgomery County, Alabama

Montgomery County · this is the capital county · the city of Montgomery is the seat and the capital of Alabama · Prattville is Autauga
This is the capital county. The city of Montgomery is the seat and the capital of Alabama.
Montgomery County, Alabama, was erected 6 December 1816 and named for Lemuel P. Montgomery. The city of Montgomery is the seat. The city of Montgomery is also the capital of Alabama. The Alabama State House sits here. The Governor’s office sits here. This county government is not the State House. This county government is not the City of Montgomery. Prattville is Autauga. Autauga already taught “not Montgomery County.” These pages teach Montgomery County as this hall. Wetumpka is Elmore. Pike Road is a town in this county — it is not the hall. Hope Hull, Ramer, Grady, Pintlala, and Pine Level are places in this county — they are not the hall. This is not Montgomery County, Maryland (Rockville). This is not Montgomery County, Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, or any other Montgomery. Birmingham is Jefferson. Huntsville is Madison. Neither is the capital.
Places include Montgomery, Pike Road, Hope Hull, Ramer, Grady, Pintlala, Waugh, and Snowdoun. 2020 census: 228,954. This page is Side One for the place. The Sheriff’s job — capital-remainder patrol and Mac Sim Butler this badge still holds — is taught at Office of the Sheriff — Montgomery County.
Five district Commissioners at 101 South Lawrence. Prattville is Autauga. Wetumpka is Elmore.
Montgomery is a five-member County Commission, one commissioner per district. The Commission chooses a Chair and Vice Chair. There is no elected County Executive. Commission offices sit at Courthouse Annex III, 101 South Lawrence Street, Montgomery, AL 36104. They fund roads, the detention house, and the Sheriff’s budget. They do not hire the Sheriff. The people do. Montgomery City Council is a city body. The Alabama Legislature is a state body. Neither is this Commission.
The Phelps-Price Justice Center is at 251 South Lawrence Street (15th Judicial Circuit — Montgomery County alone). Courthouse Annex I is 100 South Lawrence Street (Board of Registrars / Veteran’s Services). Annex II is 125 Washington Avenue (Election Center). Probate lists on Annex III. Circuit Clerk / Absentee lists at Phelps-Price. Confirm at mc-ala.org and montgomery.alacourt.gov. Prattville’s courthouse is Autauga. Wetumpka’s courthouse is Elmore.
The Sheriff is four years, Article V § 138, 2026 with the Governor. Take office 18 January 2027. The Mayor of Montgomery is a city clock. The Governor is a state clock on the same 2026 table.
The Alabama River, I-65, I-85. This is not Montgomery County, Maryland.
The Alabama River bends at the city. Interstate 65 and Interstate 85 meet here. U.S. 80, U.S. 82, and U.S. 231 are through roads. Autauga is northwest — Prattville is that hall. Elmore is north and northeast — Wetumpka is that hall. Macon is east. Bullock is southeast. Pike is south. Crenshaw is southwest. Lowndes is west. Staff who paste Rockville, Maryland, onto Lawrence Street, or treat Prattville as this hall, or file “Birmingham as the capital,” are on the wrong county.
How a capital public finds Phelps-Price, Annex I, and Mac Sim Butler
Commission / Probate (Annex III): 101 South Lawrence Street. Phelps-Price Justice Center (Circuit Clerk / Absentee / courts): 251 South Lawrence Street. Annex I: 100 South Lawrence Street. Election Center (Annex II): 125 Washington Avenue. Mac Sim Butler Detention Facility: 225 South McDonough Street (county facility directory and campus map). Older aggregators also print 250 South Perry — confirm the live jail door on mc-ala.org and montgomerysheriff.com before you drive. A student who only knows a Maryland postcard, or a Prattville photograph, or treats the State House as the county jail, has not found this campus.
Mac Sim Butler is this Sheriff. Kilby, Tutwiler, and Staton are ADOC.
Crime in unincorporated Montgomery — Pike Road remainder, Hope Hull, Ramer, Pintlala, Grady, Snowdoun — is this Sheriff. Crime in the city of Montgomery is often Montgomery Police. Crime in Pike Road is often that municipal department where it exists. This Sheriff is not Montgomery PD. The county’s own detention page says the Sheriff is responsible for day-to-day operations of the Mac Sim Butler Montgomery County Jail, designed to hold about 1,200 people a day. That house is this badge’s shop. It is not a separate county Department of Corrections that retired this jailer.
Do not paste ADOC onto this Sheriff. Kilby Correctional Facility (12201 Wares Ferry Road, Montgomery) is Alabama Department of Corrections — receiving and classification for the state. Montgomery Women’s Facility and Red Eagle Work Center (1290 Red Eagle Road) are ADOC. Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women is in Wetumpka / Elmore. Staton and Elmore CF are in Elmore. Frank Lee is a community-based ADOC house near Deatsville. Those are state prisons and work centers. They are not Mac Sim Butler. Do not send a family looking for a county booking to Kilby, to Montgomery Police Headquarters, or to Rockville, Maryland. Civil process and court security at 251 South Lawrence are the Sheriff. Rights do not change at the State House lawn. Remedy for Montgomery Police is the City. Remedy for a Sheriff’s paper is the Sheriff. Relief when I-85 ices is this count first.
Care without inventing the State House as this county jailer
A peace order served in unincorporated Hope Hull. A transport from 225 South McDonough to 251 South Lawrence without becoming Montgomery PD. Do not invent a church. Do not invent the Capitol dome as this oval. The State House is state. This Sheriff is county.
What the capital county actually watches
Court calendars at Phelps-Price. A wreck on I-65 or I-85. Fog on the Alabama River. A night road outside Pike Road. Coordination with Montgomery PD and ALEA without becoming those departments. Coordination with Autauga’s Sheriff or Elmore’s Sheriff is mutual aid between two offices, not a merger, and not a reason to file Prattville or Wetumpka as this hall. A Maryland photograph does not steal the seat. Birmingham does not steal the capital. The capital is here.
