Autauga County · Prattville · the mill town sits here · Montgomery County is a different county

Prattville is the hall. Montgomery County is a different county.

Autauga County, Alabama, was erected 21 November 1818 by the Alabama Territorial Legislature — a year before statehood. Prattville is the seat. The city of Prattville grew around Daniel Pratt’s cotton gin and mills. The city now straddles the Autauga–Elmore line. Prattville is not the whole county. Montgomery County, Alabama, is a later, different county — the capital county. Montgomery is the capital of Alabama. It sits in Montgomery County, not here. Birmingham is not the capital. This is not Autauga County, Mississippi. Elmore was carved from Autauga in 1866. Chilton was carved in 1868.

Places include Prattville, Autaugaville, Marbury, Billingsley, and Pine Level. 2020 census: 58,805. This page is Side One for the place. The Sheriff’s job — I-65 corridor patrol and Metro Jail — is taught at Office of the Sheriff — Autauga County.

Five Commissioners on Court Street. Not Prattville City Council.

Autauga is a five-member County Commission, elected from single-member districts. The Commission office lists 135 North Court Street, Suite B, Prattville, AL 36067. They fund roads, the jail campus, and the Sheriff’s budget. They do not hire the Sheriff. The people do. Prattville City Council is a city body. Prattville Police is a city badge. A family in Autaugaville does not file a county complaint at City Hall.

The Sheriff is four years, Alabama Constitution Article V, § 138, on the gubernatorial table. Tuesday, 3 November 2026. Take office the first Monday after the second Tuesday of January next after the election — Monday, 18 January 2027 (Ala. Code § 36-3-4). That is not Maryland Article XVII qualify-and-enter. That is not New Jersey’s January 1. The Governor is also 2026 — a different desk. The Mayor of Prattville is a city clock.

I-65 is a corridor. It is not a second sheriff.

Interstate 65 cuts the east side of this county toward Montgomery. U.S. 31 and U.S. 82 are the old roads. The Alabama River sits south toward Lowndes. Chilton is north. Elmore is east. Montgomery County is southeast. Lowndes is south. Dallas is west. Staff who paste a gold dome onto Court Street, or treat Prattville Police as this county, or file “Montgomery County Sheriff” for an Autaugaville paper, are on the wrong county.

How a Prattville public finds the Autauga desk

The Judge of Probate sits at 176 West Fifth Street. The Circuit Clerk and absentee work sit at 134 North Court Street. The Board of Registrars lists 218 North Court Street. The Sheriff lists 162 West Fourth Street. Metro Jail is a Sheriff division on the same court campus — directories put the house at 136 North Court Street, next to the courthouse at 134. Confirm live addresses on autaugaco.org and the Secretary of State city-county lookup. A student who only knows a mill photograph has not found Marbury.

Court Street still jails. Prattville PD does not.

Crime in unincorporated Autauga — Autaugaville, Marbury, Billingsley, Pine Level — is this Sheriff. Crime inside Prattville city is often Prattville Police. The Autauga Metro Jail is listed under this Sheriff (Jail Warden / Metro Jail on the county contact page). The Commission’s 2022–2026 courthouse-and-jail renovation reached substantial completion in February 2026. That house is this badge, not a separate Department of Corrections. Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is the state. Montgomery Police is a capital-city badge. Civil process and courthouse security at 134 North Court Street are the Sheriff. Rights do not change at the Elmore line. Remedy for Prattville Police is the City. Remedy for a Sheriff’s paper is the Sheriff. Relief when I-65 ices at Pine Level is this count first.

Care without inventing a mill chapel as this county

A peace order served in Autaugaville. A transport from Metro Jail to Circuit Court without becoming Prattville Police. Do not invent a church. Do not invent Daniel Pratt’s mill as this badge.

What Autauga actually watches

Court calendar on North Court Street. A wreck on I-65. Flood on the Alabama River toward Lowndes. Coordination with Prattville Police and ALEA without becoming those departments. Coordination with Elmore’s Sheriff across the city line is mutual aid between two offices, not a merger. Prattville the city sits in two counties. This Sheriff answers Autauga.
