Elmore County, Alabama, was erected 15 February 1866 from Autauga, Coosa, Tallapoosa, and Montgomery and named for Gen. John Archer Elmore. Wetumpka is the seat. Millbrook is the largest city. Millbrook is not the county government. Prattville is Autauga — a small part of that city spills into Elmore; it is not this hall. Tallassee straddles the Tallapoosa line. Montgomery is the capital of Alabama. It sits in Montgomery County. It does not sit here. The Alabama State House is a different building in a different county. Wetumpka is Creek for rumbling waters. It is not a substitute for Montgomery.

A student who only knows a State House photograph has not found Wetumpka.

Crime in Millbrook is often Millbrook Police. The Elmore County Jail at 8955 U.S. Highway 231 is this Sheriff’s house. Ala. Code § 14-6-1 still puts the jail on this Sheriff. A 2026 expansion groundbreaking on that campus does not move the jailer. Staton Correctional Facility at 2690 Marion Spillway Road, Elmore is ADOC. Elmore Correctional Facility at 3520 Marion Spillway Road, Speigner is ADOC. Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women is ADOC. The new large ADOC complex off Highway 143 is ADOC. The Sheriff’s own press page is honest: “Elmore Correctional Facility” is a state house, not this jail. Do not send a family looking for a county booking to Staton. ALEA is the state. Civil process and court security at 100 East Commerce are the Sheriff. Rights do not change at the Montgomery line. Remedy for Wetumpka Police is the City. Remedy for a Sheriff’s paper is the Sheriff. Relief when the Coosa comes up is this count first.
