Inyo County, California

Inyo County · Independence is the seat · Sacramento is the capital of California · Bishop is a city · Lone Pine is a town · Death Valley is a park · Mono is a different county
Independence is the seat. Sacramento is the capital. Bishop is a city, not the hall.
Inyo County, California, was created 22 March 1866 from Tulare and Mono, and named for the Inyo range — east of the Sierra crest, not Bishop as the whole county. Independence is the county seat. Sacramento is the capital of California. Independence is not the capital. Bishop is not the seat — it is the only incorporated city and the large town, still not the hall. Do not read this page as Autauga-with-a-playa. Do not read this page as Mono-with-a-dome. Prattville is Autauga. Bridgeport is Mono. Neither is this oval.
Bishop is a city — not the hall. Independence the community is the seat town — not a second county. Lone Pine, Big Pine, Tecopa, Shoshone, Cartago, Olancha, Keeler, Darwin, and the Death Valley communities are unincorporated — remainder, not a second seat. Mono is north — Bridgeport is that hall. Kern is southwest — Bakersfield is that hall. Tulare and Fresno sit west over the Sierra. Nevada is east.
This page is Side One for the place. The Sheriff’s job — Owens Valley remainder patrol and the Clay Street jail this badge still holds in Independence — is taught at Office of the Sheriff — Inyo County.
Five Supervisors at 224 North Edwards. They do not sit as the State Assembly.
Inyo is a general law county. A five-member Board of Supervisors, elected by district, sits at the County Administrative Center, 224 North Edwards Street, Independence, CA 93526. They fund roads, the Edwards courthouse campus, and the Sheriff’s budget. They do not hire the Sheriff. The people do. Bishop City Council is a city body. The California Legislature sits in Sacramento. Mono Board of Supervisors is a different county. None of those is this Board.
Inyo Superior Court lists the Independence Courthouse at 168 North Edwards Street (Departments 1 and 3 — the 1921 hall) and the Bishop Courthouse at 301 West Line Street (Department 4). Bishop is a court location. Bishop is not the hall. Do not invent one Bishop photograph as the whole map. Confirm live at inyocounty.us and inyo.courts.ca.gov.
The Sheriff is a county officer (California Constitution Article XI; Government Code § 24000). This Sheriff is not on the 2026 gubernatorial table. Elections Code § 1300 (AB 759, 2022) moved sheriff and district attorney to the presidential primary. A sheriff elected in 2022 serves a six-year term; the next regular is the 2028 presidential primary. Inyo has no charter that could have locked a gubernatorial-year date before 1 January 2021. Last regular 7 June 2022. Take office at noon on the first Monday after January 1 succeeding election (Gov. Code § 24200). The Governor is 2026. That is a different desk in Sacramento.
The Owens is a valley. Death Valley is a park. Mono is a different county.
U.S. Highway 395 is the spine of this map. State Route 190 runs toward Death Valley. The Owens River is water, not a Mono badge. Mount Whitney is the high point of the lower forty-eight — not a second county. Badwater is the low point — not a second sheriff. Death Valley National Park is federal. Staff who paste a Bishop Main Street photograph onto Edwards Street, or treat Independence as the capital, or file Bridgeport as this county government, or rewrite this county as Autauga-with-a-playa, are on the wrong county.
How an Owens Valley public finds Edwards, Clay, and Line Street
Board of Supervisors: 224 North Edwards Street, Independence. Elections / Clerk-Recorder: 168 North Edwards Street — elections.inyocounty.us. Sheriff Administration and Jail: 550 South Clay Street, Independence, CA 93526 — Sheriff (760) 878-0383, jail (760) 878-0370. Independence Courthouse: 168 North Edwards Street. Bishop Courthouse: 301 West Line Street. Bishop substation: 1360 North Main Street, Bishop. Confirm live at inyocounty.us/services/sheriff and inyocounty.us. A student who only knows a Bishop photograph, or a Sacramento photograph as this county, or treats Bishop City Hall as the jail, has not found this campus.
Clay Street still jails. Bishop PD does not.
Crime in unincorporated Inyo — Independence, Lone Pine, Big Pine, Tecopa, Shoshone, Death Valley communities, and the remainder — is this Sheriff. Crime in Bishop is often Bishop Police. This Sheriff is not that municipal department. Inyo County Jail at 550 South Clay Street, Independence, is the only county correctional facility. Official doors did not show a separate county Department of Corrections taking this house — do not invent a jailer split.
CDCR is not this Sheriff — Inyo does not host a state prison as this jailer. CHP is a state badge on 395. Death Valley National Park rangers are federal. Inyo National Forest is federal. Do not send a family looking for a county booking to Bishop PD, to a park visitor center, or to Mono County Jail in Bridgeport.
Care without inventing Bishop as this hall
A peace order served in Lone Pine remainder. A court-ordered transport from Clay Street to 168 North Edwards without becoming Bishop PD. Search and rescue the office actually posts on the Sierra escarpment and in Death Valley. Do not invent a church. Do not invent Bishop as this oval. Do not invent Sacramento as this hall.
What Inyo actually watches
Court calendar on Edwards and Line Street. A wreck on 395. Wind on the Owens. Flash flood toward Death Valley. Fire on the east slope. Coordination with Bishop PD, CHP, NPS, and USFS without becoming those departments. Coordination with Mono’s Sheriff or Kern’s Sheriff is mutual aid between two offices, not a merger. Whitney is geography. Death Valley is a park. Neither is Bishop PD as this oval.
