Kern County, California

Kern County · Bakersfield is the seat · Sacramento is the capital of California · Delano is a city · Ridgecrest is a city · Taft is a city · Fresno is a different county
Bakersfield is the seat. Sacramento is the capital. Bakersfield is not the capital.
Kern County, California, was created 2 April 1866 from Tulare and Los Angeles, and named for the Kern River — not Fresno as the whole southern valley. Bakersfield is the county seat and the large city. Sacramento is the capital of California. Bakersfield is not the capital. Delano is not the seat. Ridgecrest is not the seat. Do not read this page as Autauga-with-oil. Do not read this page as Fresno-with-a-pumpjack. Prattville is Autauga. Fresno is Fresno. Neither is this oval.
Delano is a city — not the hall. Ridgecrest is a city — not the hall. Wasco, Shafter, Taft, Tehachapi, Arvin, McFarland, California City, and Maricopa are cities — not the county government. Oildale, Lamont, Rosamond, Mojave, Frazier Park, Lake Isabella, Boron, and Buttonwillow are unincorporated communities — remainder, not a second seat. Tulare is north — Visalia is that hall. Kings is northwest — Hanford is that hall. Los Angeles is south — Los Angeles is that hall. Inyo is northeast — Independence is that hall.
This page is Side One for the place. The Sheriff’s job — southern-valley remainder patrol and Lerdo this badge still holds north of Bakersfield — is taught at Office of the Sheriff — Kern County.
Five Supervisors at 1115 Truxtun. They do not sit as the State Assembly.
Kern is a charter county. A five-member Board of Supervisors, elected by district, sits at the Kern County Administrative Center, 1115 Truxtun Avenue, Bakersfield, CA 93301. They fund roads, the Truxtun courthouse campus, and the Sheriff’s budget. They do not hire the Sheriff. The people do. Bakersfield City Council is a city body. The California Legislature sits in Sacramento. Fresno Board of Supervisors is a different county. None of those is this Board.
Kern Superior Court lists Metropolitan Division at 1415 Truxtun Avenue, the Justice Building at 1215 Truxtun Avenue, Traffic at 3131 Arrow Street, Juvenile at 2100 College Avenue, plus Delano, Lamont, Mojave, Ridgecrest, Shafter, Taft, and Lake Isabella. Do not invent one Bakersfield photograph as the whole map. Confirm live at kerncounty.com and kern.courts.ca.gov.
The Sheriff is a county officer (California Constitution Article XI; Government Code § 24000). This Sheriff is not on the 2026 gubernatorial table. Elections Code § 1300 (AB 759, 2022) moved sheriff and district attorney to the presidential primary. A sheriff elected in 2022 serves a six-year term; the next regular is the 2028 presidential primary. Kern’s charter did not lock a gubernatorial-year sheriff date before 1 January 2021. Last regular 7 June 2022. Take office at noon on the first Monday after January 1 succeeding election (Gov. Code § 24200). The Governor is 2026. That is a different desk in Sacramento.
Oil is a field. The Grapevine is a grade. Fresno is a different county.
Interstate 5, State Route 99, and State Route 58 meet on this map. The Kern River is water, not a Fresno badge. The Tehachapi Mountains are a range, not a second county. The Grapevine is a grade on I-5. The Mojave Desert is east. Oil is industry — not this government, and not a reason to rewrite Fresno. Staff who paste a Fresno photograph onto Truxtun, or treat Bakersfield as the capital, or file Delano as this county government, or rewrite this county as Autauga-with-oil, are on the wrong county.
How a southern-valley public finds Truxtun, Norris, and Industrial Farm
Board of Supervisors: 1115 Truxtun Avenue, Bakersfield. Elections: 1115 Truxtun Avenue, 1st Floor — kernvote.com. Sheriff Administration: 1350 Norris Road, Bakersfield, CA 93308. Lerdo Pre-Trial: 17695 Industrial Farm Road. Lerdo Justice Facility: 17801 Industrial Farm Road. Metro Court Holding (court holding only, not the jail): 1415 Truxtun Avenue. Metropolitan Courthouse: 1415 Truxtun. Justice Building: 1215 Truxtun. Confirm live at kernsheriff.org and kerncounty.com. A student who only knows an oil postcard, or a Sacramento photograph as this county, or treats BPD headquarters as Lerdo, has not found this campus.
Lerdo still jails. BPD does not. Wasco State Prison does not.
Crime in unincorporated Kern — Oildale, Lamont, Rosamond, Mojave, Frazier Park, Lake Isabella, Boron, Buttonwillow, and the remainder — is this Sheriff. Crime in Bakersfield is often Bakersfield Police. Crime in Delano is often Delano Police. Crime in Ridgecrest is often Ridgecrest Police. Taft, Arvin, Shafter, Tehachapi, McFarland, and California City Police are city badges. This Sheriff is not those municipal departments. Lerdo north of Bakersfield is this Sheriff’s detention campus — Pre-Trial, Justice Facility, Max-Med, Minimum. Metro Court Holding at 1415 Truxtun no longer houses — it is court holding; people in custody go back to Lerdo. Mojave Jail at 1771 Highway 58 is a Sheriff receiving house the office actually posts. Official doors did not show a separate county Department of Corrections taking Lerdo — do not invent a jailer split.
CDCR is not this Sheriff. Wasco State Prison, North Kern State Prison, Kern Valley State Prison, and California Correctional Institution at Tehachapi are state houses. CHP is a state badge. Edwards Air Force Base and NAWS China Lake are federal. Do not send a family looking for a county booking to BPD, to a Wasco CDCR gate, or to Fresno County Jail.
Care without inventing oil as a second government
A peace order served in Oildale remainder. A court-ordered transport from Lerdo to 1415 Truxtun without becoming BPD. Search and rescue the office actually posts in the Tehachapis, Frazier Park, and Kern River. Do not invent a church. Do not invent a pumpjack as this oval. Do not invent Sacramento as this hall.
What Kern actually watches
Court calendar on Truxtun. A wreck on I-5 or 99. Ice on the Grapevine. Wind on Tehachapi Pass. High water on the Kern River. Fire in the southern Sierra and the desert east. Coordination with BPD, Delano PD, Ridgecrest PD, CHP, and CDCR without becoming those departments. Coordination with Tulare’s Sheriff or Los Angeles County Sheriff is mutual aid between two offices, not a merger. Oil is industry. The Grapevine is a grade. Neither is BPD as this oval.
