Mono County, California

Mono County · Bridgeport is the seat · Mammoth Lakes is the large town, not the hall · Eastern Sierra · U.S. 395 · Sacramento is the capital · Mammoth is not this government
Bridgeport is the seat. Sacramento is the capital. Mammoth Lakes is the large town, not the hall.
Mono County, California, was created 24 April 1861, and named for Mono Lake. Bridgeport is the county seat. Sacramento is the capital of California. Bridgeport is not the capital. Mammoth Lakes is not the seat. Lee Vining is not the seat. Do not read this page as Autauga-with-granite. Do not read this page as Mammoth-as-the-county. Prattville is Autauga. The Town of Mammoth Lakes is a municipality — the large town on this map, not the hall that hires this Sheriff.
The Town of Mammoth Lakes is the only incorporated municipality. June Lake, Lee Vining, Crowley Lake, Benton, Walker, Coleville, and Topaz are communities — remainder, not a second seat. A Mammoth civic center on Tavern Road is a meeting room, not the seat. Inyo is south — Independence is that hall. Alpine is north — Markleeville is that hall. Nevada is east.
This page is Side One for the place. The Sheriff’s job — Eastern Sierra remainder patrol and 25 Emigrant Street this badge still holds in Bridgeport — is taught at Office of the Sheriff — Mono County.
Five Supervisors at 278 Main. They also meet on Tavern Road. They do not sit as the Nevada Legislature.
Mono is a general law county. A five-member Board of Supervisors sits the first two Tuesdays at the Mono County Courthouse, 278 Main Street, Bridgeport, and the third Tuesday at the Mono County Civic Center, 1290 Tavern Road, Mammoth Lakes. Clerk of the Board: P.O. Box 715, Bridgeport, CA 93517 — (760) 932-5530. They fund roads, two court calendars, and the Sheriff’s budget. They do not hire the Sheriff. The people do. Mammoth Lakes Town Council is a town body. The California Legislature sits in Sacramento. Nevada’s legislature sits in Carson City. None of those is this Board.
Mono Superior Court lists two branches: Bridgeport Courthouse, 278 Main Street, Bridgeport, CA 93517, and Mammoth Lakes Courthouse, 100 Thompson Way, Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546 — (760) 924-5444. In-custody work the Sheriff posts is handled in Bridgeport. Confirm live at monocounty.ca.gov and mono.courts.ca.gov.
The Sheriff is a county officer (California Constitution Article XI; Government Code § 24000). This Sheriff is not on the 2026 gubernatorial table. Elections Code § 1300 (AB 759, 2022) moved sheriff and district attorney to the presidential primary. A sheriff elected in 2022 serves a six-year term; the next regular is the 2028 presidential primary. Mono has no charter that could have locked a gubernatorial-year date before 1 January 2021. Last regular 7 June 2022. Take office at noon on the first Monday after January 1 succeeding election (Gov. Code § 24200). The Governor is 2026. That is a different desk in Sacramento.
Mono Lake is water. Mammoth is a town. Inyo is a different county.
U.S. 395 is the spine. Tioga Pass closes. The Sierra crest is a wall, not a Fresno badge. Mono Lake is a lake, not a second county. Inyo is south — Independence is that hall; Bishop is that county’s city, not this one. Alpine is north. Tuolumne, Madera, and Fresno sit west of the crest. Staff who paste a Mammoth ski photograph onto Bryant Street as if it were this hall, or treat 1290 Tavern as the seat, or file Bridgeport as the capital, or rewrite this county as Autauga-with-granite, are on the wrong county.
How an Eastern Sierra public finds Bryant, Emigrant, and 278 Main
Board of Supervisors / Courthouse: 278 Main Street, Bridgeport. Elections: 74 North School Street, Annex I, Bridgeport — (760) 932-5537 — monocounty.ca.gov/elections. Sheriff Main Office: 49 Bryant Street, Bridgeport, CA 93517 — (760) 932-7549. Jail: 25 Emigrant Street, Bridgeport — dispatch (760) 932-7549. Courts: 278 Main Street, Bridgeport, and 100 Thompson Way, Mammoth Lakes. Confirm live at monosheriff.org and mono.courts.ca.gov. A student who only knows a Mammoth lodge photograph, or a Sacramento photograph as this county, or treats Town Hall as the jail, has not found this campus.
25 Emigrant still jails. Mammoth Lakes PD does not.
Crime in unincorporated Mono — June Lake, Lee Vining, Crowley, Benton, Walker, Coleville, Topaz, and the remainder — is this Sheriff. Crime in Mammoth Lakes is often Mammoth Lakes Police. This Sheriff is not that municipal department. Mono County Jail at 25 Emigrant Street is this Sheriff’s house. The county posts a new jail project — confirm the live door before you treat a construction page as a second house. Official doors did not show a separate county Department of Corrections taking this house — do not invent a jailer split.
CDCR is not this Sheriff. There is no state prison on this map. CHP is a state badge. Yosemite and Inyo National Forest officers are not this oval. Do not send a family looking for a county booking to Mammoth Lakes PD, to Independence’s Clay Street, or to a ski-patrol desk.
Care without inventing Mammoth as this hall
A peace order served in Lee Vining remainder. A court-ordered transport from 25 Emigrant to 278 Main Street without becoming Mammoth PD. In-custody appearances the Sheriff posts in Bridgeport. Do not invent a church. Do not invent Mammoth as this oval. Do not invent Sacramento as this hall.
What Mono actually watches
Court calendar on Main Street — and a south-county calendar on Thompson Way. A wreck on 395. Snow on Tioga. Wind on Mono Lake. Fire on the east slope. Coordination with Mammoth Lakes PD, CHP, Inyo’s Sheriff, Alpine’s Sheriff, and Nevada neighbors without becoming those departments. Granite is geography. A lodge is a town. Neither is Bridgeport PD as this oval — Bridgeport has no city PD.
