Hudson County · Jersey City · the densest county still hires a county

Jersey City is the seat. Trenton is still Mercer.

Hudson is a North Jersey county on the Hudson River, created 1840 from Bergen. Jersey City is the seat. It is the second-largest city in the state. It is not the capital. Trenton is the capital of New Jersey and sits in Mercer. Manhattan is New York. Newark is Essex. Hackensack is Bergen. Hudson County, New York, is a different state.

Twelve municipalities: Bayonne, East Newark, Guttenberg, Harrison, Hoboken, Jersey City, Kearny, North Bergen, Secaucus, Union City, Weehawken, and West New York. Jersey City is this county. Newark is Essex. Trenton is Mercer. Hackensack is Bergen.

This page is Side One for the place. The Sheriff’s job — Brennan Courthouse court security, process, not the Kearny jail — is taught at Office of the Sheriff — Hudson County.

Nine Commissioners by district plus a Register

Hudson adopted the Optional County Charter — County Executive form. The County Executive is a four-year elected desk. Nine County Commissioners sit by district and run concurrent three-year terms — all nine at once, not the usual stagger. Hudson also elects a County Register — a fifth constitutional officer most New Jersey counties do not have. Essex is the other. That is not Cape May’s five-commissioner map. That is not Hunterdon’s five.

The Sheriff is a constitutional officer, three years, Article VII, Section II, paragraph 2. The County Executive does not hire this badge. Last regular sheriff general was 4 November 2025. Next regular is Tuesday, 7 November 2028. Tuesday, 3 November 2026 is not this oval. The Governor is 2029.

Hudson River and the Palisades, not the Pinelands

The Hudson River, the Hackensack, the Meadowlands, and the south end of the Palisades are this land. The Holland Tunnel, the Lincoln Tunnel, PATH, and the Turnpike Extension are this pavement. Liberty State Park looks at a harbor that is real. No Boardwalk as the county hall. No gold capitol dome as the county story — that dome sits in Mercer. Staff who paste Manhattan City Hall onto Newark Avenue are on the wrong county.

How a waterfront public actually files a paper

Each municipality has a site. Hoboken’s site does not speak for Bayonne. The Sheriff’s listing speaks for court, process, warrants, and transport. The Hudson County Correctional Center at 30–35 South Hackensack Avenue, Kearny is Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation — a Director, not this Sheriff. The County Clerk lists at Hudson County Plaza, 257 Cornelison Avenue. Do not send a Weehawken family to Trenton for a county paper. Do not send them to Manhattan for a New Jersey writ.

Brennan Courthouse, a jail in Kearny that is Corrections

Crime in Jersey City is often Jersey City Police. Crime in Hoboken is often Hoboken Police. Port Authority is the tubes and the bus terminal. Civil process, Superior Court security at 583 and 595 Newark Avenue, sheriff sales, and fugitive work are this Sheriff. Jail as a local house is Kearny Corrections. Rights do not change at the Weehawken line. Remedy for city police is the City. Remedy for a Sheriff’s paper is the Sheriff. Relief when the Hackensack floods Kearny is this count first.

A student who stays on Newark Avenue

A student uses town pages, the county jobs board, or the Sheriff’s official listing at 583 / 595 Newark Avenue and 257 Cornelison. Hudson County Community College is not the jail. Outreach that only knows one skyline is not doing East Newark or Guttenberg.
