Cape May is New Jersey’s southernmost county, a peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay, created 1692. Cape May Court House — unincorporated in Middle Township — is the seat. The City of Cape May sits at the point. Victorian streets do not move the county hall. Trenton is the capital of New Jersey and sits in Mercer. Atlantic is north. Cumberland is northwest. Delaware Bay is west. The Atlantic is east.
Sixteen municipalities include Ocean City, Sea Isle City, Avalon, Stone Harbor, the Wildwoods, the City of Cape May, West Cape May, Cape May Point, Lower, Middle, Upper, Dennis, and Woodbine. Ocean City is this county. Atlantic City is Atlantic. Vineland is Cumberland. Newark is Essex.

Five Commissioners, no County Executive
Cape May did not take the Optional County Charter Executive form. A five-member Board of County Commissioners sits at 4 Moore Road. That is not Atlantic’s Executive on Atlantic Avenue. That is not Essex’s Executive in Newark. Cumberland is also a commissioner county, and is still a different map.
The Sheriff is a constitutional officer, three years, Article VII, Section II, paragraph 2. The Commissioners fund the office. They do not hire this badge. The people do. 2026 is this Sheriff’s regular table here. The Governor is 2029. Do not paste a gubernatorial oval onto North Main Street.
Peninsula between the Atlantic and Delaware Bay
Salt marsh, cedar swamp, barrier islands, and U.S. 9 through Middle Township are this land. The Garden State Parkway ends on this map. Cape May–Lewes Ferry leaves the west side for Delaware. No Palisades as the county story. No Cohansey as the county hall. Staff who paste a Boardwalk casino onto Court House are on the wrong county.
How a Shore public actually files a paper
Each municipality has a site. Ocean City’s site does not speak for Woodbine. The Sheriff’s listing speaks for court, process, warrants, transport, and the jail. The Cape May County Correctional Center at 125 Crest Haven Road is this Sheriff’s Corrections Division — not Atlantic’s Adult Detention, not Cumberland’s Department of Corrections. The County Clerk is at 7 North Main Street. Do not send a Dennis family to Trenton for a county paper. Do not send them to Cape May City tourism for a writ.
Courts at Court House, a jail the Sheriff still holds
Crime in Ocean City is often Ocean City Police. Crime in Wildwood is often Wildwood Police. New Jersey State Police is the state. Civil process, Superior Court security, sheriff sales, fugitive work, and the Correctional Center are this Sheriff. Jail as a long state sentence is the Department of Corrections — a different door. Rights do not change at the Woodbine line. Remedy for city police is the City. Remedy for a Sheriff’s paper or a booking is the Sheriff. Relief in a nor’easter on the barrier islands is this count first.
A student who stays in Middle Township
A student uses town pages, the county jobs board, or the Sheriff’s official listing at 9 North Main Street / 4 Moore Road. Outreach that only knows Victorian weekends is not doing Woodbine or Dennis.
