Bergen is a North Jersey county on the Hudson and the Hackensack River, one of the original four counties of 1683. Hackensack is the seat. Newark is Essex. Jersey City is Hudson. New York City is a different state. Trenton is the capital of New Jersey and sits in Mercer. Passaic and Essex sit south and west. Rockland County, New York sits north.
Seventy municipalities. Fort Lee, Englewood, Teaneck, Paramus, Ridgewood, Fair Lawn, Garfield, Lodi, Mahwah, Ramsey, Lyndhurst, Rutherford, and the rest. Paramus is this county. Paterson is Passaic. Atlantic City is Atlantic. Philadelphia is Pennsylvania.

Bergen adopted the Optional County Charter — County Executive form. The County Executive sits at One Bergen County Plaza. The Board of County Commissioners is the legislative board. Municipal police departments remain the 911 answer in almost every borough and township. That is not Atlantic’s Shore charter. That is not Burlington’s commissioner-only map.
The Sheriff is a constitutional officer, three years. The County Executive does not hire this badge. 2027 is this Sheriff’s next regular table — last regular 2024. Tuesday, 3 November 2026 is not this oval. The Governor is 2029.
Palisades and the Hudson, not the Pinelands
The Hudson, the Hackensack, the Passaic on the edge, and the Palisades cliffs are this land. The George Washington Bridge lands in Fort Lee. The Meadowlands sit on the south. I-80, the Turnpike, and Route 4 are this pavement. No Boardwalk as the county story. No Great Egg Harbor as the county hall. Staff who paste a casino onto the Palisades are on the wrong county.
How a Palisades public actually files a paper
Each of the seventy has a site. Fort Lee’s site does not speak for Mahwah. The Sheriff’s listing speaks for court, process, warrants, identification, and the Bergen County Jail. Administration sits at Two Bergen County Plaza / the Justice Center at 10 Main Street. Do not send a Ramsey family to Newark for a county paper. Do not send them to Manhattan.
Courts, the jail the Sheriff still holds
Crime in Englewood is often Englewood Police. Crime in a borough is that borough. New Jersey State Police is the state. Civil process, Superior Court security, sheriff sales, and the Detention Center at 160 South River Street are this Sheriff — a Warden on a bcsd.us listing, which is this office, not a separate county corrections department. That is the opposite of Atlantic and Camden, where a Warden sits outside this badge. Rights do not change at the Teaneck line. Remedy for borough police is the borough. Remedy for a Sheriff’s paper or booking is the Sheriff. Relief when the Hackensack floods is this count first.
A student who stays on the Plaza
A student uses municipal pages, the county jobs board, or the Sheriff’s official listing. Fairleigh Dickinson and Ramapo College are campuses. They are not the jail. Outreach that only knows bridge tourism is not doing Upper Saddle River.
