What this office is
A United States Senator is a federal legislator elected by the whole state. Wisconsin has two Senate seats. This page is Class I — one of those two. The term is six years. Class I last stood in the regular election of 2024. The next regular election is 2030. The term of record runs through 3 January 2031.
Wisconsin has no Class II. The other seat is Class III. There is no 2026 U.S. Senate race in Wisconsin. Florida and Ohio 2026 Class III specials are not this office.
This is not a House district. Wisconsin has seventy-two counties. Madison is the capital, on the isthmus in Dane County — not Milwaukee as the state. Milwaukee is the largest city, on Lake Michigan. It is not the map. The Northwoods, the Driftless coulees, the dairy counties, and the Fox Valley hire the same Senator.
Wisconsin’s House map splits the work into eight districts. Milwaukee County is split on that House map. The Senate seat does not split.

How the job fits this community
Class I is the longer remaining regular clock after 2026. The inbox is still the state: a capital file from the Madison isthmus, a Milwaukee lakefront file that is not the capital, a Kenosha-and-Racine industrial shore on Lake Michigan, a Fox Valley file from Appleton or Oshkosh or Green Bay, a Driftless coulee file from La Crosse country, a dairy-county elevator that never makes a national broadcast, and a Northwoods file from Wausau or Rhinelander or Superior.
People here meet the federal government as SSA, VA, IRS, a delayed Corps permit on the lakeshore, a farm bill in a dairy county that is not Milwaukee, a Great Lakes port that is not Illinois, and a winter that is not a Capitol Square press conference. The Senator is the human hinge between this map and Washington — for six years, not two.
Staff who only know the Third Ward, or only know State Street, are not doing the job. Minnesota is a different state — Superior looks at Duluth and remains Wisconsin. Illinois is a different state — Kenosha looks south and remains Wisconsin. Michigan is a different state — Door County looks at the water and remains Wisconsin. The Upper Peninsula is not this office.
What the job entails
- Legislate. Introduce and cosponsor bills. Sit on committees. Vote.
- Advice and consent. Nominations and treaties.
- The purse, with the House. Appropriations decide what actually gets built or staffed.
- Oversight. Hearings and letters that watch the executive branch.
- Casework. Statewide — 72 counties, including towns that are not on I-94 or I-41.
- Two homes. Washington for votes. Wisconsin for the people who hired the office.
What a day is like
There is no single Tuesday. In Washington: a visitor from Dane County and a visitor whose drive started in Superior, a Fox Cities plant, or a Driftless town that is not Wisconsin’s 2nd House district. In the state: a Madison desk, a Lake Michigan day, and a Northwoods day that is not Milwaukee.
The staff is the office. A serious Senator is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy.
