What this office is
A United States Senator is a federal legislator elected by the whole state. South Dakota has two Senate seats. This page is Class III — the other of those two. The term is six years. Class III last stood in the regular election of 2022. The next regular election is 2028. The term of record runs through 3 January 2029.
Florida and Ohio Class III specials in 2026 are not this office. South Dakota Class III is not on the 2026 Senate ballot. South Dakota’s 2026 Senate race is Class II. South Dakota has no Class I.
This is not a House district. Watertown is not Spearfish. Mitchell is not Winner. Yankton on the Missouri is not a Nebraska town. They still hire the same Senator. Pierre remains the capital on this twin too. Sioux Falls is still not the dome. Rapid City is still not the map. The at-large House seat is still not this office.

How the job fits this community
Class III is the longer remaining regular clock after 2026. The geography is still the state: a northeast prairie inbox (Aberdeen, Watertown) that is not the Black Hills, a Badlands and ranch inbox west of the river, a Rosebud and Cheyenne River file that is not a slogan, an Oahe and Missouri crossing file, and a capital that already has a Class II inbox. Senate casework does not stop at Minnehaha County.
Federal work here is a farm bill, a Corps file on the Missouri, SSA, veterans’ claims, IHS, and a drought year on the west-river grass that is not a Rapid City story. The Senator is the human hinge between that statewide map and Washington.
The Black Hills are not a postcard. Harding County still writes letters.
What the job entails
- Legislate. Introduce and cosponsor bills. Sit on committees. Vote.
- Advice and consent. Nominations and treaties.
- The purse, with the House. Appropriations decide what actually gets built or staffed.
- Oversight. Hearings and letters that watch the executive branch.
- Casework. Statewide — including counties that are not on I-90.
- Two homes. Washington for votes. South Dakota for the people who hired the office.
What a day is like
There is no single Tuesday. In Washington: a file from the east-river cities and a file from a two-lane county in the Hills. In the state: a day that is not the same as the at-large House race, even when both touch Sioux Falls.
The staff is the office. A serious Senator is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy.
