What this office is
A United States Senator is a federal legislator elected by the whole state. South Dakota has two Senate seats. This page is Class II — one of those two. The term is six years. Class II last stood in the regular election of 2020. The next regular election is Tuesday, November 3, 2026. The term of record runs through 3 January 2027.
South Dakota has no Class I. The other seat is Class III.
This is not a House district. South Dakota has sixty-six counties. Pierre is the capital, on the Missouri River — not Sioux Falls, not Rapid City. Sioux Falls is the largest city, east of the river. Rapid City is the Black Hills city. Neither is the map. The Missouri, the Black Hills, the prairie, the reservation nations, and the I-90 towns hire the same Senator.

How the job fits this community
Class II is the seat on the 2026 ballot. The inbox is a state inbox: a capital file from Pierre that is not Sioux Falls, an east-river city file that is not the capital, a Black Hills file from Rapid City that is not a park brochure, a reservation-nation file that is a government-to-government stack, a prairie cattle file off I-90, and a county elevator that never makes the national news.
People here meet the federal government as SSA, VA, IRS, IHS, a delayed Corps permit on the Missouri or Oahe, a farm bill east of the river, an Ellsworth family, and a winter that is not a Sioux Falls press conference. The Senator is the human hinge between this map and Washington — for six years, not two.
Staff who only know downtown Sioux Falls, or only know Mount Rushmore Avenue, or only know the capitol lawn, are not doing the job. North Dakota is a different state. Nebraska is a different state. Minnesota is a different state. Wyoming is a different state.

- Two homes. Washington for votes. South Dakota for the people who hired the office.
What a day is like
There is no single Tuesday. In Washington: a visitor from Hughes County and a visitor whose drive started in Pine Ridge, Aberdeen, or a Black Hills precinct that is not the at-large House office even when both cover the whole map. In the state: a Pierre desk, an east-river day, and a west-river day that crosses the Missouri.
The staff is the office. A serious Senator is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy.
