What this office is
A United States Senator is a federal legislator elected by the whole state. Ohio has two Senate seats. This page is Class III — the other of those two. The term is six years. Class III last stood in the regular election of 2022. The next regular election is 2028. The Class III term of record runs through 3 January 2029.
A vacancy put a special election on the 2026 ballot for this class only — remainder of the term, not a new six-year clock. Florida also has a 2026 Class III special. Ohio Class I is not on the 2026 Senate ballot. Ohio has no Class II. Do not invent a third Senate seat.
This is not a House district. Youngstown is not Dayton. Marietta is not Akron. Portsmouth on the Scioto’s mouth is not the Statehouse. They still hire the same Senator. Columbus remains the capital on this twin too. Cleveland is still not the dome.

How the job fits this community
Class III is the Ohio seat with two clocks in view: a 2026 special for the remainder, and a 2028 regular for the next full term. The geography is still the state: Appalachian Ohio is not the Miami Valley, the Mahoning Valley is not Capitol Square, Wright-Patterson is not a Lake Erie ore dock, and a Chillicothe / Scioto file is not a Cuyahoga file. Senate casework does not stop at one media market.
Federal work here is a base, a mill town that is not the capital, a VA clinic in a rust-belt city that is not Columbus, a delayed federal permit on the Ohio River, a Wayne National Forest county, and a farm year in a county that still plants. The Senator is the human hinge between that statewide map and Washington.
The hills of Athens and Washington counties are Ohio. They are not Kentucky’s coalfields and not Pennsylvania’s. Montgomery County still writes letters.
What the job entails
- Legislate. Introduce and cosponsor bills. Sit on committees. Vote.
- Advice and consent. Nominations and treaties.
- The purse, with the House. Appropriations decide what actually gets built or staffed.
- Oversight. Hearings and letters that watch the executive branch.
- Casework. Statewide — including counties that are not on I-71.
- Two homes. Washington for votes. Ohio for the people who hired the office.
What a day is like
There is no single Tuesday. In Washington: a file from Dayton and a file from Steubenville. In the state: a day that is not the same as Ohio’s 6th House district, even when both touch Appalachian Ohio, and not the same as the 10th, even when both touch the Miami Valley.
The staff is the office. A serious Senator is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy.
