What this office is
A United States Senator is a federal legislator elected by the whole state. Ohio has two Senate seats. This page is Class I — one of those two. The term is six years. Class I last stood in the regular election of 2024. The next regular election is 2030. The term of record runs through 3 January 2031.
Ohio has no Class II. The other seat is Class III. Ohio’s 2026 Senate ballot is not this class. The 2026 Class III special is taught on Class III.
This is not a House district. Ohio has eighty-eight counties. Columbus is the capital — Capitol Square on the Scioto, not Cleveland, not Cincinnati, not Toledo. Cleveland is a Lake Erie city. Cincinnati is an Ohio River city. Toledo is a Maumee / western-basin port. They hire the same Senator. So do the farm counties that never make a national camera.
Ohio’s House map splits the work into fifteen districts. Hamilton, Franklin, and Cuyahoga metros are split on that map. The Senate seat does not split.

How the job fits this community
Class I is the longer remaining regular clock of Ohio’s two seats. The inbox is a state inbox: a capital file from Franklin County, a Lake Erie file from Cuyahoga or Lucas that is not the dome, a farm-bill file from Darke or Putnam or Fayette, a Honda / Marysville plant file from Union County, and a VA file from a county that is not on the news.
People here meet the federal government as SSA, veterans’ claims, IRS, passports, Medicare, a delayed Corps permit on the Ohio or the Scioto, a NASA Glenn file out of Brook Park, and a lake year that is not Michigan’s story and not Pennsylvania’s. The Senator is the human hinge between this map and Washington — for six years, not two.
Staff who only know High Street, or only know Public Square, are not doing the job. Kentucky is a different state. Pennsylvania is a different state. Michigan is a different state. Holmes County still writes letters.
What the job entails
- Legislate. Introduce and cosponsor bills. Sit on committees. Vote.
- Advice and consent. Nominations and treaties.
- The purse, with the House. Appropriations decide what actually gets built or staffed.
- Oversight. Hearings and letters that watch the executive branch.
- Casework. SSA, VA, IRS, USCIS, military records, passports — statewide, including 88 counties.
- Two homes. Washington for votes. Ohio for the people who hired the office.
What a day is like
There is no single Tuesday. In Washington: a visitor from the Statehouse and a visitor whose drive started in Ashtabula, Van Wert, or a Toledo precinct that is not the 9th House district. In the state: a Columbus desk, a Lake Erie day that is not the Miami Valley, and a two-lane farm-county day that is not Ohio’s 4th.
The staff is the office. A serious Senator is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy.
