Sheriff Election — Washington County, Vermont

Sheriff election briefing — Washington County, Vermont — capital county, four-year clock — educational cover

Washington Sheriff · the arena · the capital county hires this desk · not the Governor

This is Side Two

This page is the arena for this office, this cycle. Unique teaching for the job lives on the office twin. Montpelier as capital-and-shire, Barre as granite, is taught at Washington County.

It is not a campaign. Names belong on the official sample ballot. No crown.

When the capital county hires — do not merge the Governor

Four years (Chapter II, § 50). Takes office 1 February. Last regular 2022. SOS lists Sheriff for 2026. Primary 11 August 2026. General Tuesday, 3 November 2026. Take-office after a regular 2026 win: 1 February 2027.

The Governor is on the 2026 ballot and is two years. That hire is statewide. This hire is Washington County only. Sharing a city with the State House does not make this a statewide race. High Bailiff is two years. A Montpelier municipal race is a city race. Chittenden hires a different Sheriff.

County-office petitions: 100 signatures, major-party filing with the county clerk. Vermont mails the general ballot by October 1 — vote.vermont.gov. Polls close 7 p.m. Confirm on the Secretary of State.

Sample ballot wins

Do not take names from a State House hallway or a granite-shed rumor.

  1. Official candidate list / sample ballot — Secretary of State
  2. Vermont Voter Portal
  3. Current Sheriff of record — official Washington County Sheriff’s Department site
  4. City and town clerks from Montpelier to Cabot

If a site and the official sample ballot disagree, the sample ballot wins.

What you are hiring

You are hiring the Sheriff of Washington County — civil process from the Mad River to Cabot, court security in the capital county, transport as assigned. You are not hiring Capitol Police. You are not hiring Montpelier Police. You are not hiring the Chittenden County Sheriff. You are not hiring the Governor. Read the office page first.

Rights, remedy, relief, service, due process

Papers honestly. Courthouse without a circus. Transport without a shortcut. Remedy is official doors and courts. Relief when the Winooski comes over the banks is this count first. Equal protection from Roxbury to Woodbury.
