The mountain county hires on 3 November 2026
Article IV, § 44: four years. The State Board of Elections — Offices up for Election in 2026 lists Sheriff among local offices on the gubernatorial cycle.
- Closed primary: Tuesday, 23 June 2026 (already sat).
- General: Tuesday, 3 November 2026.
- Qualify: as soon as practicable after the election; enter immediately upon qualification (Art. XVII § 4).
- Vacancy rule: the Governor appoints the remainder.
The Governor is also 2026 — a different oval. The Mayor of Cumberland is a city clock. Class II U.S. Senate is not on Maryland’s 2026 table. A mountain photograph does not rewrite the sheriff year.

What you are hiring — patrol and the jail
You are hiring the Sheriff of Allegany County — full-service: unincorporated patrol, civil process from Flintstone to Westernport, court in Cumberland, and the Detention Center on McMullen Highway. You are not hiring Cumberland Police. You are not hiring MSP. You are not hiring the Anne Arundel County Sheriff. You are not hiring the Governor.

Remedy on a three-commissioner map
A bad service or a booking that missed Westernport — this Sheriff’s door and the courts. The Board of County Commissioners is the county board, not the internal-affairs substitute for a paper. Not a comment section. Not Annapolis.

Due process does not wait for a capital rumor
A levy in Frostburg still needs notice. A booking still needs a commissioner. The Constitution does not pause because a visitor thinks Maryland is only Annapolis.
