What this office is

The Mayor of Santa Fe is elected at-large by the people of this city. The municipal charter makes the Mayor the full-time chief executive officer of the City of Santa Fe. The Mayor has a vote on every matter that comes before the governing body. A City Manager is the chief administrative officer — appointed by the Mayor with the consent of the governing body — and hires and fires city employees except the City Attorney and the City Clerk. Santa Fe is the capital of New Mexico, in Santa Fe County, at about 7,000 feet, on the Sangre de Cristo slope, in high desert with piñon and juniper. The Santa Fe River is a river that often runs dry. That is the land. Albuquerque is not the capital. The Roundhouse — New Mexico’s round State Capitol — is the state, not City Hall. The capital is not Albuquerque

Staff who only know I-25 as the state, or only know Albuquerque as New Mexico, are not doing this job. Albuquerque is a different city with a different Mayor. Los Alamos is a different town. Española is a different city. Tesuque Pueblo is not a Santa Fe precinct. The Sangre de Cristo range is this city’s eastern wall. The high desert is this city’s floor. Do not paste a Rio Grande bosque that belongs to a valley this office does not run.

Ranked-choice on the Plaza, not a party primary

The Mayor is a city executive hired by the voters of Santa Fe, not by the Roundhouse and not by a county commission. Eight Councilors sit two from each of four districts. The Mayor sits with them and votes. Ranked-choice tabulation is how this city finishes a Mayor race when more than two people file. Confirm structure in the Santa Fe Municipal Charter and the City Clerk’s current notice. Do not treat a social-media thread as the ranking rules. New Mexico’s Local Election Act sets the odd-year November date. A campaign mailer is not that date.

Charter, council, and a manager the Mayor appoints

The Santa Fe County Sheriff runs county process — a different office. The U.S. Attorney and the District Attorney are not this Mayor. Equal protection on these streets is this executive’s duty under the charter and the Constitution. Not a crime-scene postcard. Not a tourism night.

After the arroyo fills

Disaster comfort after a monsoon that takes an arroyo, a winter outage at 7,000 feet, a wildfire that comes off the mountain, a freeze that breaks a pipe on the southside — chaplaincy and family liaison as the departments actually staff them. Do not invent a church. Do not turn grief into a slogan. The Mayor’s house is this city. Mutual aid with the county and surrounding pueblos and towns is real. Albuquerque’s firehouse is not this hydrant.

Santa Fe Fire and Santa Fe Police run the academies and the in-service that actually keep this altitude. Trades that keep the lights and the pipes — electrician, HVAC, CDL, water — sit next to this office on Side One. A student who wants the civic path confirms openings on official city employment pages, not on a campaign site. The school district is not the Mayor’s personal classroom.

Acequia, airport, and the Roundhouse block

Weather on the Sangre de Cristo. A dry river that still floods. Ice on Cerrillos. Jail and lockup counts that are Police and Sheriff coordination, not a rumor. Court dockets downtown. Airport traffic at SAF that dumps people onto city pavement. Situational awareness is a city radio. Not spy fiction. The Roundhouse is a state block. The Plaza is this city’s square.

The southside the postcard never prints

Unincorporated Santa Fe County is not this city’s map — this city is the map. Neighborhoods off Airport Road, along Rodeo, along Agua Fria, that never make a Plaza photograph still hire this Mayor. Staff who only know the portal and Canyon Road are on the wrong office. Acequia associations, houses of worship, and community boards are how the desk talks — official doors, not a viral thread.
