The Mayor of Austin is elected at-large by the people of this city. The charter is council-manager with a 10-1 Council: the Mayor plus ten district council members. A City Manager is the chief administrative officer and runs the daily departments. The Mayor presides, represents the city, and is the political executive the voters actually hire. That is a clock on this city, not a slight. Do not invent a Houston-style strong-mayor race that this charter does not run.
The term is four years. After the 2021/2022 transition, the regular Mayor election sits on the November uniform date in presidential even years. The last Mayor election was 5 November 2024. Austin is the capital of Texas, in Travis County, on the Colorado River as Lady Bird Lake, at the edge of the Hill Country. Houston is not the capital. Dallas is not the capital. The Mayor is a city executive hired by the voters of Austin, not by the Legislature and not by a county commissioners court. District council members hold neighborhood inboxes. The City Manager holds the daily departments. The Mayor holds the public night: what police, fire, EMS, lights, streets, and water actually do here. Confirm structure in the City Charter, Article II. A night arrest in East Austin is an Austin Police minute. A fire on a hillside house west of MoPac is an Austin Fire minute. The Travis County Sheriff runs the jail and county process — a different office. The U.S. Attorney and the District Attorney are not this Mayor. Equal protection from Dove Springs to the Domain is this executive’s duty under the charter and the Constitution. Not a crime-scene postcard.

Disaster comfort after a Hill Country flash flood, a heat outage in East Austin, a fire that takes a block — chaplaincy and family liaison as the departments actually staff them. Do not invent a church. Do not turn grief into a slogan. The Mayor’s house is this city.

Austin Fire and Austin Police run academies. Trades that keep the lights and the pipes — electrician, HVAC, CDL, water — sit next to this office on Side One. A student who wants the civic path confirms openings on official city employment pages, not on a campaign site. The University of Texas is not the municipal desk. The school district is a city inbox that is not the Mayor’s personal classroom.

Unincorporated Travis land is not Austin’s map — this city is the map. Neighborhoods that never make a Congress Avenue postcard still hire this Mayor. Dove Springs is Austin. Rundberg is Austin. Staff who only know downtown are on the wrong office. Schools, houses of worship, and neighborhood associations are how the desk talks — official doors, not a viral thread.
