What this office is

The Mayor of Albany is elected at-large by the people of this city. The charter is a strong Mayor: the Mayor is the chief executive officer and administrative head of the City of Albany. The executive power of the City is vested in the Mayor and in the departments the code actually creates. The Mayor appoints and removes nonelected department heads. A Common Council legislates. A President of the Common Council is elected at-large and succeeds the Mayor under the rules the charter and General City Law actually write. That is a clock on this city, not a slight. This is not a council-manager city.

The term is four years, commencing the first day of January after the election. Regular city elections for Mayor, Treasurer, Chief City Auditor, Common Council President, and the ward Council members run on the same four-year clock. The last Mayor election was 4 November 2025. The next regular Mayor election is 2029. Confirm the clock, and the Mayor of record, on official Albany sites. Do not invent a 2026 Mayor race for this city.

New York’s even-year local-election statute does not apply to city offices. Albany County’s own transition guidance says so. Town and some county seats moved. This Mayor did not. 2026 is a federal and state year. It is not this municipal clock.

This is not the Governor. The Governor file lives at Governor of New York. This is not the Albany County Sheriff. Albany Police and Albany Fire are this city’s departments.

Albany is the capital of New York, in Albany County, on the Hudson River. Manhattan is not the capital. Buffalo is not the capital. Empire State Plaza and the Corning Tower are the state. The capital is not Manhattan

Dongan Charter city — how the people hire this desk

The Mayor is a city executive hired by the voters of Albany, not by the Legislature and not by a county legislature. Ward Council members hold neighborhood inboxes. The Common Council President holds an at-large check. The Mayor holds the night: police, fire, EMS, lights, streets, water. Albany still sits on the Dongan Charter of 1686 as a civic fact, rewritten by the voters in 1998. Confirm structure in the City Charter and eCode. Do not treat a news comment as the charter.

What the 1998 charter still holds

City ordinances, the charter, and state law that assigns municipal police, fire, and public-works duty. Corporation Counsel is this city’s lawyer, not the Attorney General of New York. Civil process that is a city paper is not the Albany County Sheriff’s paper. Warrants and bookings that run through Albany Police are a city file. Albany Police and Fire on this bank

A night arrest in Arbor Hill is an Albany Police minute. A fire in a South End row is an Albany Fire minute. The Albany County Sheriff runs the jail and county process — a different office. The U.S. Attorney and the District Attorney are not this Mayor. Equal protection on these streets is this executive’s duty under the charter and the Constitution. Not a crime-scene postcard.
