Yavapai County, Arizona, was one of four original Arizona counties, erected 9 November 1864 and named for the Yavapai people. Prescott is the seat. Prescott was the territorial capital in 1864–1867 and again in 1877–1889. Phoenix is the capital now. Prescott Valley is the large town — 2020 census slightly ahead of Prescott city. Prescott Valley is not the hall. Cottonwood is a Verde Valley city — not the hall. Camp Verde is a town — not the hall, even though the main jail sits there. Sedona straddles Yavapai and Coconino — it is not this county hall. Chino Valley and Dewey-Humboldt are towns — not the hall. This Sheriff is the county officer. This Sheriff is not Prescott Police. Yavapai is a five-member Board of Supervisors, one supervisor per district. The board chooses a Chair. A County Administrator sits with the board. They fund roads, both detention sites, and the Sheriff’s budget. They do not hire the Sheriff. The people do. Prescott City Council is a city body. The Arizona Legislature sits in Phoenix. Neither of those is this Board.
The Yavapai County Superior Court still sits at the historic courthouse, 120 South Cortez Street, on Courthouse Square, and at the Criminal Justice Center, 1200 Prescott Lakes Parkway. Verde Valley divisions also sit. Confirm at yavapaiaz.gov and the Arizona Judicial Branch. Flagstaff is Coconino. Phoenix is Maricopa — and the capital.
The Sheriff is four years, Arizona Constitution Article XII, § 3, on the presidential table. Last regular Tuesday, 5 November 2024. Next regular Tuesday, 7 November 2028. Take office 1 January 2029. 2026 is the Governor. That is a different desk in Phoenix. The Mayor of Prescott is a city clock.

A student who only knows a Sedona photograph, or a Phoenix postcard, has not found this campus.
Prescott Valley is larger. Cottonwood is Verde Valley. Apache Junction is Pinal.
Crime in unincorporated Yavapai — Williamson Valley, Mayer, Paulden, the remainder around Prescott Valley and the Verde — is this Sheriff. Crime in Prescott is often Prescott Police. Crime in Prescott Valley, Cottonwood, Camp Verde, Chino Valley is often those municipal departments. Crime in Sedona is often Sedona Police. This Sheriff is not those badges. The county’s own Detention page puts primary housing at Camp Verde and holding at Prescott Lakes Parkway. Those houses are this badge’s shop. ADC is the state prison system. Do not send a family looking for a county booking to Sedona, to Phoenix, or to Flagstaff.
Civil process and court security at 120 South Cortez and the Criminal Justice Center are the Sheriff. Rights do not change at a red-rock overlook. Remedy for Prescott Police is the City. Remedy for a Sheriff’s paper is the Sheriff. Relief when I-17 ices at the Rim is this count first.

Court calendars at Courthouse Square and at Prescott Lakes Parkway. A wreck on I-17. Ice on State 89. Fire weather on the forest edge. A night road outside Mayer. Coordination with city police, DPS, and tribal partners without becoming those departments. Coordination with Coconino’s Sheriff or Maricopa’s Sheriff is mutual aid between two offices, not a merger, and not a reason to file Phoenix as this hall. A Sedona photograph does not steal the seat. Phoenix remains the capital.
