Tehama County, California, was created 9 April 1856 from parts of Butte, Colusa, and Shasta. The county is named for the City of Tehama — a Wintun word commonly taught as high water or low land on the Sacramento. The city is not this government. The Legislature first sat the seat in the town of Tehama. Red Bluff took the seat by 1857 and still holds it. Sacramento is the capital of California. Red Bluff is not the capital.
