Redding is the seat. Sacramento is the capital. Mount Shasta is not this hall.
Shasta County, California, is one of the state’s original twenty-seven counties, created 18 February 1850. The 2020 census listed about 182,155 people. Official county pages describe a map on the order of 3,850 square miles at the north end of the Sacramento Valley, climbing into the southern Cascades. The county seat is Redding. The capital of California is Sacramento. Those two sentences stay true no matter how many visitors photograph Lassen Peak or the Sundial Bridge.
The county is named for the Shasta people and for Mount Shasta. Mount Shasta the peak, and the City of Mount Shasta, are in Siskiyou County. Naming is not the map. Staff who file “Mount Shasta PD as this hall,” or “Autauga-with-a-volcano,” or “a coast county,” are on the wrong jurisdiction.
Three incorporated cities sit here: Redding, Anderson, and the City of Shasta Lake. Lake Shasta is the reservoir behind Shasta Dam. The City of Shasta Lake is a city north of Redding. Do not swap the reservoir for the city, or the city for the dam.

Five Supervisors at 1450 Court. They do not sit as the State Assembly.
A five-member Board of Supervisors is the county’s elected governing body. Official listings put county administration at 1450 Court Street, Redding. They set policy and the budget. They fund West Street, Park Marina, Lockheed Drive, Burney, and the Shasta Lake station. They do not sit as the California Legislature. They do not sit as Redding City Council. They do not hire the Sheriff on the ordinary clock — the people do, in 2028.
Shasta voters approved a charter (Measure D, March 2024). The Secretary of State’s filing was confirmed in September 2025, making Shasta California’s fifteenth charter county. Early charter text has been described as speaking first to filling a vacant Supervisor seat locally rather than by gubernatorial appointment. Charter status does not move the sheriff oval to 2026. AB 759’s exception is for charters that already timed the sheriff on or before 1 January 2021. Confirm live charter text and board agendas on shastacounty.gov.
Superior Court lists the Redding Main Courthouse at 1515 Court Street — courtrooms, jury assembly, the docket this Sheriff still screens and transports to. That is the court, not the Board, and not Redding City Hall at 777 Cypress Avenue.
The Sacramento River is a river. I-5 is a road. Tehama is a different county.
The Sacramento River runs through Redding. Interstate 5 is the north-south spine. State Route 299 runs east through the Intermountain toward Burney and west toward Whiskeytown and Trinity. State Route 44 runs toward Lassen. Lake Shasta, Whiskeytown, and Lassen Volcanic are water and park — not Tehama as this oval, not Siskiyou as this hall, and not a coast. Trinity County sits west toward the coast. This county does not become Trinity because a visitor drove 299.
Neighbors, clockwise enough to keep straight: Siskiyou north, Modoc northeast, Lassen east, Plumas southeast, Tehama south, Trinity west. Not those counties. A family looking for a booking in Yreka, Red Bluff, Weaverville, or Susanville is on a different Sheriff.
Timber, fire, the dam, medical services in Redding, and the I-5 freight are work on this map. None of that is a Golden Gate rewrite. None of that is a beach.

Redding PD and Anderson PD keep their own non-emergency lines. Do not call Park Marina for a Cypress Avenue city call, and do not call Cypress Avenue for a West Street booking.
West Street still jails. Redding PD does not. CDCR does not.
Justice here still runs through this Sheriff’s Custody Division at 1655 West Street, then the docket at 1515 Court Street. Redding Police does not hold that jail. Anderson Police does not hold that jail. CDCR holds Sugar Pine Conservation Camp, which is state. Juvenile Hall is probation. Politics on this page is the people’s hire of the county officers California actually elects here — Sheriff-Coroner, district attorney, assessor, the five Supervisors — not a city chief, not the Governor as this hall.
Due process at West Street still needs a clock: booking, counsel, a court date, humane custody. A court-ordered 90-percent cap on beds is a court fact, not a rumor that the jail moved to Court Street. Aggregators that still print 1525 Court Street as the jail are wrong. The official jail page says 1655 West Street.
Care without inventing a Lassen postcard as this county government
Ministry on this map is the work the offices actually do: next-of-kin from the Coroner at Veterans Lane, disaster comfort when the timber goes, a welfare check on an unincorporated road, burial of the unclaimed as the Coroner’s statute assigns. Do not invent a church. Do not invent Lassen Peak as the county government. Do not invent the Sundial Bridge as this Board.
Pit River, Wintu, and Yana country is here. Redding Rancheria is a federally recognized tribe on this map. Outreach that never leaves downtown Redding is not doing the remainder, and it is not doing the tribe.
