Modesto is the seat. Sacramento is the capital. Turlock is not the hall.

Stanislaus County, California, was created 1 April 1854 from Tuolumne County, and named for the Stanislaus River — itself named for Estanislao. The river is not this government. Modesto the city is the county seat. Sacramento is the capital of California. Modesto is not the capital. Turlock is not the hall. Do not read this page as Autauga-with-almonds. Do not read this page as San Joaquin-with-a-rename. Do not read this page as Merced-with-a-north-stamp. Do not read this page as a Stockton postcard as this government. Prattville is Autauga. Stockton is San Joaquin County. Merced the city is Merced County. None of those is this oval.

Turlock is a city — not the hall. Ceres is a city — not the hall. Oakdale is a city — not the hall. Riverbank, Patterson, Newman, Waterford, and Hughson are cities — not the hall. Salida is unincorporated. California State University, Stanislaus, sits in Turlock — a campus, not this government. The Modesto Arch is a landmark, not this jailer.

This page is Side One for the place. The Sheriff’s job — unincorporated remainder patrol, four contract cities the office actually posts, and Hackett this badge still holds — is taught at Office of the Sheriff — Stanislaus County.

Created 1854 from Tuolumne. Named for a river, not for Stockton.

The county is about 1,515 square miles in the northern San Joaquin Valley. Nine incorporated cities. Five Supervisors. An appointed Chief Executive Officer runs day-to-day county administration — that is not the Sheriff. Do not file this map as San Joaquin County. San Joaquin County’s seat is Stockton. This seat is Modesto.

Five Supervisors at 1010 Tenth. They share a building with the City. They are not the City.

Stanislaus is a general-law county. A five-member Board of Supervisors, elected by district, sits at Tenth Street Place, 1010 10th Street, Suite 6500, Modesto, CA 95354. The City of Modesto also occupies that building. They are not the same government. The Board funds roads, the courthouse, and the Sheriff’s budget. They do not hire the Sheriff. The people do. Modesto City Council is a city body. The California Legislature sits in Sacramento. None of those is this Board.

The Stanislaus County Superior Court lists the downtown campus the court actually posts. Do not invent a Turlock courthouse as this hall. Confirm live at stancounty.com and the court’s live door.

The Sheriff is a county officer (California Constitution Article XI; Government Code § 24000). This Sheriff is not on the 2026 gubernatorial table. Elections Code § 1300 (AB 759, 2022) moved sheriff and district attorney to the presidential primary. A sheriff elected in 2022 serves a six-year term; the next regular is the 2028 presidential primary. Stanislaus is general lawno charter exception locked a different sheriff date here on or before 1 January 2021. Last regular 7 June 2022. Take office at noon on the first Monday after January 1 succeeding election (Gov. Code § 24200). The Governor is 2026. That is a different desk in Sacramento.

99 is the spine. I-5 is the west side. San Joaquin County is north. Merced is south.

State Route 99 runs Modesto–Ceres–Turlock. Interstate 5 runs the west side toward Patterson and Newman. State Routes 108, 120, and 132 cross the map. The Stanislaus River, the Tuolumne River, and the San Joaquin River are water, not a Stockton badge. San Joaquin is north — Stockton is that hall; French Camp is that jailer. Merced is south — Merced the city is that hall; Sandy Mush is that jailer. Tuolumne is east — Sonora is that hall. Calaveras is northeast — San Andreas is that hall. Santa Clara and Alameda sit west over the Diablo Range. Staff who paste a Stockton photograph onto Tenth Street Place, or treat Modesto as the capital, or file Turlock as this county government, or rewrite this county as Autauga-with-almonds, are on the wrong county.

A student who only knows a Stockton postcard, or treats Modesto PD as this jailer, or drives to 1115 H Street for a booking, has not found this campus.

This Sheriff still holds 200 East Hackett. 1115 H Street does not.

Crime in unincorporated Stanislaus County is this Sheriff. Crime in the City of Modesto is often Modesto Police. This Sheriff is not that municipal department. Sheriff’s Detention Center at 200 East Hackett Road is this Sheriff’s shop — East, West, and Minimum Housing on the same campus. Official pages also list REACT at 194 East Hackett Road. Official doors did not show a separate county Department of Corrections taking Hackett — do not invent a jailer split. The former Men’s Jail at 1115 H Street is closed. Families still drive there. Do not.

CHP is a state badge. CSU Stanislaus police is a campus badge. Do not send a family looking for a county booking to Modesto PD, to a Turlock police door, to H Street, or to French Camp.

Care without inventing a cannery as this county government

A peace order served in unincorporated remainder. A court-ordered transport from Hackett to 11th Street without becoming Modesto PD. Mutual aid when 99 closes in fog, or when the Tuolumne rises. Coroner work at 921 Oakdale Road. Do not invent a church. Do not invent Stockton as this oval. Do not invent Sacramento as this hall.

What Stanislaus County actually watches

Court calendar downtown. A wreck on 99. Tule fog. High water on two rivers that share a name with neighboring counties and are not those counties. Fire in the Diablo foothills west of I-5. Coordination with Modesto PD, Turlock PD, CHP, and San Joaquin’s Sheriff without becoming those departments. Almonds and dairy are work. A campus in Turlock is a campus. Neither is Stockton as this oval.
