Prairie County, Arkansas

Prairie County · Des Arc and DeValls Bluff, Arkansas · the Sheriff hall sits in Des Arc · DeValls Bluff is not this Sheriff hall · Prairie County, Texas, is not this hall
Two county seats. Des Arc is the Sheriff hall. DeValls Bluff is the southern courthouse. This is not two counties.
Prairie County, Arkansas, was created 25 November 1846 from Monroe and Pulaski, named for the Grand Prairie. Association of Arkansas Counties: this is a dual-seat county. Northern District sits in Des Arc — 1913 Georgian courthouse at 200 Courthouse Square. Southern District sits in DeValls Bluff — 1939 Quasi-Georgian courthouse at 123 Magnolia Street. There is one Sheriff. AAC, ASA, and the live Sheriff site put headquarters and detention at 200 Courthouse Square, Suite 101, Des Arc. DeValls Bluff is a second seat of justice, not a second county, not a second Sheriff. Regular White River flooding made the southern trip to Des Arc hard; the 1885 split is geography, not two ovals.
Des Arc is the large city on this map and the northern seat. Hazen is a city — not the hall. Biscoe and Ulm are not the hall. Brownsville was the first seat (1846–1868) — that ground is Lonoke County now, not this hall.
This is not Prairie County, Texas / Montana / Illinois / Wisconsin. This is not Arkansas County (DeWitt / Stuttgart — a county named Arkansas, already unique). Little Rock is the capital of Arkansas. It does not sit here.
This page is Side One for the place. The Sheriff’s job — northern and southern patrol and the Courthouse Square house this badge still holds in Des Arc — is taught at Office of the Sheriff — Prairie County.
Nine JPs. They fund two courthouses. They do not hire this badge.
Prairie is an elected Quorum Court of nine justices of the peace (AAC listing). Justices sit two years. The County Judge is the chief executive (Amendment 55), presides, has no vote, and holds the veto. County Judge lists at 605 Highway 38 East, Des Arc, AR 72040. They fund roads, both courthouse campuses, and the Sheriff’s budget. They do not hire the Sheriff. The people do. Des Arc City Council is a city body. DeValls Bluff City Council is a city body. Hazen City Council is a city body. DeValls Bluff is not this commission as the whole county.
Northern courthouse: 200 Courthouse Square, Des Arc. Southern courthouse: 123 Magnolia Street, DeValls Bluff. AAC lists County Clerk / Circuit Clerk combined with a Des Arc window and a DeValls Bluff window. Collector is a separate elected desk listed at Suite 101 on the same square as the Sheriff — confirm live whether that is a shared door. Do not invent a combined Sheriff-Collector. Do not invent two sheriffs because two courthouses.
The Sheriff is four years, Art. 7 § 46, 2026 with the Governor. Take office 1 January 2027. The Mayor of Des Arc is a city clock. The Mayor of DeValls Bluff is a city clock.
White River, Grand Prairie, Wattensaw. Little Rock is the capital.
U.S. 70, U.S. 79, I-40, and Arkansas 11 / 38 are through roads. The White River runs past both seats. The Grand Prairie is the land — rice, cotton, soybeans, catfish. Wattensaw Wildlife Management Area (about 17,433 acres) sits on this map. Cache River National Wildlife Refuge touches the east. White is north — Searcy is that hall. Woodruff is northeast — Augusta is that hall. Monroe is east — Clarendon is that hall. Arkansas is south — DeWitt / Stuttgart are those dual seats. Lonoke is west — Lonoke the city is that hall. Staff who paste a Texas prairie postcard onto Courthouse Square, or treat DeValls Bluff City Hall as this Sheriff, or file “two sheriffs because two courthouses,” are on the wrong county.
How a Des Arc public finds Courthouse Square — and how a DeValls Bluff public still uses the same Sheriff
County Judge: 605 Highway 38 East, Des Arc, AR 72040. County Clerk / Circuit Clerk (northern): 200 Courthouse Square, Suite 104, Des Arc. Southern Circuit Clerk door: DeValls Bluff (870) 998-2314 on the Magnolia campus. Sheriff HQ and Jail: 200 Courthouse Square, Suite 101, Des Arc, AR 72040. Confirm addresses on prairiecountysheriff.org and arcounties.org/counties/prairie. A student who only knows a Texas photograph, or only a DeValls Bluff storefront as this oval, has not found Des Arc. A student south of the White River still uses this Sheriff — the southern courthouse is a filing door, not a second oval.
Courthouse Square still jails. DeValls Bluff is a court door. Hazen PD is a city badge.
Crime in unincorporated Prairie — Hazen remainder, Biscoe remainder, Ulm remainder, U.S. 70 frontage, White River bottoms, Grand Prairie roads — is this Sheriff. Crime in Des Arc is often Des Arc Police. Crime in DeValls Bluff is often that municipal department where it exists. Hazen Police is a city badge. This Sheriff is not those departments. Live listings put HQ and detention at 200 Courthouse Square, Suite 101, Des Arc. ASA capacity 64, male and female. Encyclopedia of Arkansas photographs the Sheriff Department and Detention Center at Des Arc. An adjacent historic jail building at DeValls Bluff is not proof of a second live county house — confirm the live booking door in Des Arc. No separate county Department of Corrections turned up — do not invent a jailer split. Do not send a family looking for a county booking to DeValls Bluff City Hall, to Hazen, or to Prairie County, Texas. Civil process and courthouse security at both district doors are the Sheriff. Rights do not change on the prairie. Remedy for Hazen Police is the City. Remedy for a Sheriff’s paper is the Sheriff. Relief when the White River comes up is this count first.
Care without inventing a rice-prairie chapel as this county
A peace order served in unincorporated Hazen remainder. A court-ordered transport from Suite 101 to 200 Courthouse Square without becoming Des Arc PD. Do not invent a church. Do not invent a Wattensaw campground as this oval.
What Prairie actually watches
Court calendar on Courthouse Square and on Magnolia. A wreck on U.S. 70. Fog on the Grand Prairie. High water on the White River. Ice toward I-40. Coordination with Des Arc Police, Hazen Police, and ASP without becoming those departments. Coordination with Lonoke’s Sheriff or Monroe’s Sheriff is mutual aid between two offices, not a merger. The river is geography. It is not two sheriffs. It is not Little Rock as this seat.
