Monroe County, Alabama, was erected 29 June 1815 and named for James Monroe. Claiborne was the first seat. Monroeville has been the seat since 1832. Monroeville is the large town — it is the hall. Monroe is a five-member County Commission. There is no County Executive. Commission and court sit on Courthouse Square at 65 North Alabama Avenue, Monroeville. They fund roads, the detention house, and the Sheriff’s budget. They do not hire the Sheriff. The people do. Monroeville City Council is a city body.
The courthouse is at 65 North Alabama Avenue (35th Judicial Circuit with Conecuh — Evergreen is that other hall). The Circuit Clerk and Absentee Election Manager list that Alabama Avenue door. District Court lists the same square. A gift shop in the 1903 building is not this clerk.
The Sheriff is four years, Article V § 138, 2026 with the Governor. Take office 18 January 2027. The Mayor of Monroeville is a city clock.

The Alabama River cuts the west toward Claiborne. U.S. 84 is the through road. State 21 and State 41 meet on the square. Wilcox is north. Butler and Conecuh are east — Evergreen is Conecuh’s hall. Escambia and Baldwin are south. Clarke is west — Grove Hill is that hall. Staff who paste a Florida Keys postcard onto North Alabama Avenue, or treat the 1903 museum as this court, or file “Mobile as this hall,” are on the wrong county.

It is not a separate county Department of Corrections. The old jail on the square that now sells lodging is not this house.
