Clarke County, Alabama, was erected 10 December 1812 by the Mississippi Territory, from land taken from Washington. It is named for John Clarke of Georgia — that name is history, not a map merge. Grove Hill is the seat — from 1831–32, when the hall moved from Clarkesville. The town was Smithville, then Macon, then Grove Hill for the oaks. Jackson is the largest city (2020 city count ahead of Thomasville). Jackson is not the county government. Thomasville is a large town in the north of this map. Thomasville is not the hall. This is not Clarke County, Georgia (Athens-Clarke). This is not Clarke County, Mississippi, Iowa, or Virginia. Montgomery is the capital of Alabama. It does not sit here.

Clarke is a five-member County Commission, one commissioner per district. The chair rotates among the five (local law, about every nine months). There is no County Executive. The Commission meets the second and fourth Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. in the Annex / Commissioners Courtroom, 114 Court Street, Grove Hill. They fund roads, the jail, and the Sheriff’s budget. They do not hire the Sheriff. The people do. Jackson City Council is a city body. Thomasville is a city. Grove Hill Town Council is a town body.
The Sheriff is four years, Article V § 138, 2026 with the Governor. Take office 18 January 2027. The Mayor of Jackson is a city clock. The Mayor of Thomasville is a city clock.
The Alabama and the Tombigbee meet at the south point. Georgia is a different Clarke.
Clarke is third-largest by land in Alabama (about 1,238 square miles of land). The Tombigbee is the west bank. The Alabama River is the east bank. The two meet at the south point and become the Mobile. U.S. 43 runs north–south. U.S. 84 runs east–west through Grove Hill. Marengo is north. Wilcox is northeast. Monroe is east. Baldwin is south. Washington is southwest. Choctaw is northwest. The Clarke County Courthouse campus at 114 Court Street (Circuit listings also use 117 Court Street on the same block) is the court of the 1st Judicial Circuit. Staff who paste an Athens-Clarke, Georgia, hall onto Court Street, or treat Jackson as today’s seat, or file “Thomasville, the county hall,” are on the wrong county.

Crime in unincorporated Clarke — Coffeeville country, Fulton, Whatley, the dirt roads between the rivers — is this Sheriff. Crime in Jackson and Thomasville where those governments keep officers is often municipal. Grove Hill keeps a town police. This Sheriff is not Jackson PD. The county itself says the Clarke County Sheriff’s Department maintains the County Jail at 149 Clark Street. That is not a separate county Department of Corrections. A short-term juvenile detention house is also listed on the county Sheriff pages — still this county, not a Warden split invented here. Do not paste an Athens-Clarke booking onto Clark Street. Do not send a family looking for a county booking to Jackson City Hall. Civil process and courthouse security at 114 Court Street are the Sheriff. Rights do not change at the Tombigbee. Remedy for Jackson Police is the City. Remedy for a Sheriff’s paper is the Sheriff. Relief when the rivers come up is this count first.

Court calendar on Court Street. A wreck on U.S. 43. Fog on a dirt road toward Coffeeville. High water on the Tombigbee. A night road outside Fulton. Coordination with Jackson PD, Thomasville PD, Grove Hill Police, and ALEA without becoming those departments. Coordination with Choctaw’s Sheriff or Washington’s Sheriff is mutual aid between two offices, not a merger. A third-largest-by-land county does not shrink the Constitution.
