The county site says the Chairman serves a six-year term — that is the Judge of Probate sitting as chair, the usual Alabama probate clock. Commissioners serve four years. The people do. Butler Town Council is a town body. Greenville is Butler County.

Crime in unincorporated Choctaw — and in the smaller towns that do not keep a full municipal police — is this Sheriff. Crime in Butler where the town keeps officers is often municipal. The old Choctaw County Jail at 217 South Hamburg Avenue was closed 17 July 2019 by the fire marshal. That is a building fact. It is not a Maryland-style Warden split. Ala. Code § 14-6-1 still names the Sheriff as jailer. A 58-bed house is under construction on the same lot (East Church Street and South Hamburg Avenue). WTOK reported the project about 60 percent complete in August 2026, with a projected finish in early 2027. Until that house opens, the office has housed inmates in neighboring county jails. Neighboring housing is a temporary practice. It is not a second jailer. Civil process and court security at 117 South Mulberry are the Sheriff. Rights do not change at the Tombigbee. Remedy for Butler Police is the Town. Remedy for a Sheriff’s paper is the Sheriff. Relief when the river comes up is this count first.

Coordination with a Mississippi sheriff across the line — or with Sumter, Clarke, or Washington — is mutual aid between two offices, not a merger. A jail under construction is this county’s house coming back. It is not Butler County’s jail.
