What this office is
A United States Senator is a federal legislator elected by the whole state. West Virginia has two Senate seats. This page is Class I — one of those two. The term is six years. Class I last stood in the regular election of 2024. The next regular election is 2030. The term of record runs through 3 January 2031.
West Virginia has no Class III. The other seat is Class II. West Virginia Class I is not on the 2026 Senate ballot. West Virginia’s 2026 Senate race is Class II.
This is not a House district. West Virginia has fifty-five counties. Charleston is the capital, on the Kanawha in Kanawha County — not Huntington, not Morgantown. Huntington is an Ohio River city. Morgantown is a northern campus city. Neither is the map. Charleston, South Carolina is a different capital in a different state. The coal counties, the Ohio River towns, the Alleghenies, the New River gorge country, and the Eastern Panhandle that looks at Virginia and Maryland and remains West Virginia hire the same Senator.
West Virginia’s House map splits the work into two districts. The 1st is the south (Charleston, Huntington, Beckley). The 2nd is the north and both panhandles. There is no 3rd House seat. The Senate seat does not split.

How the job fits this community
Class I is the longer remaining regular clock after 2026. The inbox is still the state: a capital file from the Kanawha, a Huntington river-plant file that is not the capital, a Beckley-and-New-River file, a southern coal-county clinic, a Wheeling mill file from the northern panhandle, a Morgantown campus file from the 2nd House district, and a Martinsburg commute in the Eastern Panhandle that looks at Virginia and Maryland and still files West Virginia.
People here meet the federal government as SSA, VA, IRS, a delayed Mine Safety or Corps permit, a black-lung clinic, a flood year on the Kanawha or the Ohio that is not a Charleston press conference, and a park-and-gorge file on the New River that is not a postcard. The Senator is the human hinge between this map and Washington — for six years, not two.
Staff who only know Capitol Street, or only know a river city, or still teach three House seats, are not doing the job. Ohio is a different state. Virginia is a different state. Maryland is a different state. Kentucky is a different state. Pennsylvania is a different state. South Carolina’s Charleston is not this capital.

- Advice and consent. Nominations and treaties.
- The purse, with the House. Appropriations decide what actually gets built or staffed.
- Oversight. Hearings and letters that watch the executive branch.
- Casework. Statewide — 55 counties, including towns that are not on I-64 or I-79.
- Two homes. Washington for votes. West Virginia for the people who hired the office.
What a day is like
There is no single Tuesday. In Washington: a visitor from Kanawha County and a visitor whose drive started in McDowell, Berkeley, or a New River town that is not West Virginia’s 1st House district alone. In the state: a Charleston desk, an Ohio River day, and an Allegheny-ridge day that is not Huntington.
The staff is the office. A serious Senator is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy.
