What this office is

A United States Representative is a federal legislator elected from one congressional district. New York’s 11th is one of the state’s 26 House seats. The term is two years. The whole House stands for election every even-numbered year.

This page is Side One: inform, educate, inspire. It is not the race, not legal advice, and not an official government notice. For the 2026 cycle, use the election twin.

Confirm the current Member and the official map on House.gov — Find your Representative and the Clerk of the House.

How the job fits this community

New York’s congressional map for the 2026 ballot is the map the legislature passed and the Governor signed on 28 February 2024 (S.8653A / A.9310A). It is not the 2022 special-master map. A January 2026 order against the 11th was stayed by the U.S. Supreme Court on 2 March 2026; that case was then dismissed. Confirm on the State Board of Elections and voter lookup. Brooklyn is split. Manhattan is split. Staten Island is one seat. Look up the address.

The 11th is all of Staten Island plus southwest Brooklyn: Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Bath Beach, Bensonhurst, western Gravesend. A January 2026 order against this seat was stayed by the U.S. Supreme Court on 2 March 2026. The 28 February 2024 lines are the 2026 ballot. The old 11th (central Brooklyn) is a retired number — that terrain is now the 9th. Confirm the address.

Federal work here is a borough inbox and a southwest-Brooklyn inbox. Staten Island files like a county that happens to sit inside the city: ferry, bridge, refinery, and a North Shore / South Shore split. Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights file a Brooklyn waterfront. Staff who treat this as all of Brooklyn, or as the old central-Brooklyn 11th, are not doing the job.

The Representative is the human hinge between this Staten-Island-and-Bay-Ridge map and Washington.

What the job entails

  • Legislate. Introduce and cosponsor bills. Sit on committees. Vote.
  • The purse. The House originates revenue bills. Appropriations decide what actually gets built or staffed.
  • Oversight. Hearings and letters that watch the executive branch.
  • Casework. SSA, VA, IRS, USCIS, military records, passports.
  • District presence. Town halls, city halls, employers, schools — the district is the employer.
  • Two homes. Washington for votes and committees. The district for the people who hired the office.

What a day is like

There is no single Tuesday. In Washington: a visitor from St. George and a visitor from Bay Ridge. In the district: a ferry day and a Ridge desk.

The staff is the office. A serious Member is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy.

Place snapshot (verify official sources)

  • State: New York · Seat: District 11 of 26
  • On the 2024 legislature map: all of Staten Island / Bay Ridge / Dyker Heights / Bensonhurst
  • Jan 2026 strike stayed. Staten Island is wholly in this seat.

Orientation adapted from public congressional-district descriptions and New York official election sources for education. The map and the Member of record are whatever the State Board of Elections and House.gov say today.

What this is not

  • Not a U.S. Senator (statewide, six-year term).
  • Not the Governor.
  • Not the Mayor of New York City, or a borough president.
  • Not a campaign flyer. This page does not tell anyone who to vote for.
