What this office is

A United States Representative is a federal legislator elected from one congressional district. New York’s 1st is one of the state’s 26 House seats. The term is two years. The whole House stands for election every even-numbered year.

This page is Side One: inform, educate, inspire. It is not the race, not legal advice, and not an official government notice. For the 2026 cycle, use the election twin.

Confirm the current Member and the official map on House.gov — Find your Representative and the Clerk of the House.

How the job fits this community

New York’s congressional map for the 2026 ballot is the map the legislature passed and the Governor signed on 28 February 2024 (S.8653A / A.9310A). It is not the 2022 special-master map. A January 2026 order against the 11th was stayed by the U.S. Supreme Court on 2 March 2026; that case was then dismissed. Confirm on the State Board of Elections and voter lookup. Long Island is split. Nassau is split. Queens pieces sit in the 3rd.

The 1st is eastern Suffolk and the North Shore: the Hamptons, the North Fork, Riverhead, Port Jefferson, Smithtown, Shelter Island. This is not Babylon and it is not Hempstead. Confirm the official towns.

Federal work here is an East End inbox and a North Shore inbox. The Hamptons file a seasonal-and-year-round stack. Smithtown and Port Jefferson file a suburb. Riverhead files a farm-and-county-seat. Staff who treat all of Suffolk as one seat are not doing the job.

The Representative is the human hinge between this East-End-and-North-Shore map and Washington.

What the job entails

  • Legislate. Introduce and cosponsor bills. Sit on committees. Vote.
  • The purse. The House originates revenue bills. Appropriations decide what actually gets built or staffed.
  • Oversight. Hearings and letters that watch the executive branch.
  • Casework. SSA, VA, IRS, USCIS, military records, passports.
  • District presence. Town halls, city halls, employers, schools — the district is the employer.
  • Two homes. Washington for votes and committees. The district for the people who hired the office.

What a day is like

There is no single Tuesday. In Washington: a visitor from Southampton and a visitor from Smithtown. In the district: a fork day.

The staff is the office. A serious Member is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy.

  • Suffolk is split. The South Shore is the 2nd.

Orientation adapted from public congressional-district descriptions and New York official election sources for education. The map and the Member of record are whatever the State Board of Elections and House.gov say today.

What this is not

  • Not a U.S. Senator (statewide, six-year term).
  • Not the Governor.
  • Not the Mayor of New York City, or a Long Island town supervisor.
  • Not a campaign flyer. This page does not tell anyone who to vote for.
