What this office is
A United States Representative is a federal legislator elected from one congressional district. Missouri’s 8th is one of the state’s eight House seats. The term is two years. The whole House stands for election every even-numbered year.
This page is Side One: inform, educate, inspire. It is not the race, not legal advice, and not an official government notice. For the 2026 cycle, use the election twin.

How the job fits this community
Missouri’s congressional map for the 2026 ballot is House Bill 1, signed 28 September 2025. The Missouri Supreme Court on 12 May 2026 upheld that map for this cycle. Kansas City is split. Confirm on the Secretary of State and voter lookup. A referendum petition was filed against the map — whether anything about it is on a later ballot is whatever the Secretary of State posts. Do not take a screenshot as law.
The 8th is southeastern Missouri: the Bootheel, Cape Girardeau, Poplar Bluff, and the rural southeast. Confirm the official line.
Federal work here is a river-bluff city, a farm delta, and timber-and-factory towns. Cape files like a regional city. The Bootheel files USDA. Staff who only know one courthouse are not doing the job.
The Representative is the human hinge between this southeast map and Washington.
What the job entails
- Legislate. Introduce and cosponsor bills. Sit on committees. Vote.
- The purse. The House originates revenue bills. Appropriations decide what actually gets built or staffed.
- Oversight. Hearings and letters that watch the executive branch.
- Casework. SSA, VA, IRS, USCIS, military records, passports.
- District presence. Town halls, city halls, employers, schools — the district is the employer.
- Two homes. Washington for votes and committees. The district for the people who hired the office.
What a day is like
There is no single Tuesday. In Washington: a visitor from Cape and a visitor from the Bootheel. In the district: a bluff desk and a long south-east drive.
The staff is the office. A serious Member is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy.
