What this office is

A United States Representative is a federal legislator elected from one congressional district. Florida’s 8th is one of the state’s 28 House seats. The term is two years. The whole House stands for election every even-numbered year.

This page is Side One: inform, educate, inspire. It is not the race, not legal advice, and not an official government notice. For the 2026 cycle, use the election twin.

Confirm the current Member and the official map on House.gov — Find your Representative and the Clerk of the House.

How the job fits this community

Florida’s congressional map for the 2026 ballot is HB 1D, signed 4 May 2026. North Florida’s 1st through 7th were not redrawn — those lines are the 2022 lines. The 8th is the first seat that moved. Litigation is pending. Unless a court says otherwise, HB 1D is the map. Confirm on the Division of Elections and voter lookup. Look up the address.

The 8th is the first seat HB 1D redrew. All of Brevard stays: Titusville, Cocoa, Cape Canaveral, Melbourne, Palm Bay, the Kennedy Space Center. Indian River County and Vero Beach left — they are the 9th. The Orange County piece, which used to be a sliver around Christmas and Wedgefield, drives west and picks up about 160,000 more Orange County residents. Orange County is split across several seats. Do not guess the street. Confirm on the Orange County Supervisor of Elections and voter lookup.

Federal work here is a Space Coast inbox and a new Orange inbox. Brevard files the Cape, the Center, and a beach-city stack. The new Orange share files an eastern-metro commute this office did not used to carry. Staff who still file Vero Beach here are on the 2022 map. Staff who treat all of Orange County as this seat are not doing the job.

The Representative is the human hinge between this Brevard-and-eastern-Orange map and Washington.

What the job entails

  • Legislate. Introduce and cosponsor bills. Sit on committees. Vote.
  • The purse. The House originates revenue bills. Appropriations decide what actually gets built or staffed.
  • Oversight. Hearings and letters that watch the executive branch.
  • Casework. SSA, VA, IRS, USCIS, military records, passports.
  • District presence. Town halls, city halls, employers, schools — the district is the employer.
  • Two homes. Washington for votes and committees. The district for the people who hired the office.

What a day is like

There is no single Tuesday. In Washington: a visitor from Melbourne and a visitor from eastern Orange. In the district: a Space Coast desk and an Orange desk.

The staff is the office. A serious Member is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy.

Place snapshot (verify official sources)

  • State: Florida · Seat: District 8 of 28
  • On HB 1D (redrawn): all Brevard + a much larger eastern-Orange share
  • Vero Beach / Indian River left — they are the 9th.

Orientation adapted from public congressional-district descriptions and Florida official election sources for education. The map and the Member of record are whatever the Division of Elections and House.gov say today.

What this is not

  • Not a U.S. Senator (statewide, six-year term).
  • Not the Governor.
  • Not a county commission, or a mayor.
  • Not a campaign flyer. This page does not tell anyone who to vote for.
