What this office is

A United States Representative is a federal legislator elected from one congressional district. Florida’s 18th is one of the state’s 28 House seats. The term is two years. The whole House stands for election every even-numbered year.

This page is Side One: inform, educate, inspire. It is not the race, not legal advice, and not an official government notice. For the 2026 cycle, use the election twin.

Confirm the current Member and the official map on House.gov — Find your Representative and the Clerk of the House.

How the job fits this community

Florida’s congressional map for the 2026 ballot is HB 1D, signed 4 May 2026. The 1st through 7th were not redrawn. This seat moved. Litigation is pending. Unless a court says otherwise, HB 1D is the map. Confirm on the Division of Elections and voter lookup. Look up the address.

The 18th is redrawn. The old seat ran from Polk south through DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands, Glades, Okeechobee, and Hendry. Those interior counties left — they are now the 9th, the 16th, and the 17th. The new 18th is centered on Polk (Lakeland) with part of Osceola. This is not the old giant rural 18th. Confirm the county.

Federal work here is a Polk inbox. Lakeland files a mid-state city. Osceola files a remaining slice. Staff who still file Sebring, Okeechobee, or Hendry here are on the 2022 map.

The Representative is the human hinge between this Polk-first map and Washington.

What the job entails

  • Legislate. Introduce and cosponsor bills. Sit on committees. Vote.
  • The purse. The House originates revenue bills. Appropriations decide what actually gets built or staffed.
  • Oversight. Hearings and letters that watch the executive branch.
  • Casework. SSA, VA, IRS, USCIS, military records, passports.
  • District presence. Town halls, city halls, employers, schools — the district is the employer.
  • Two homes. Washington for votes and committees. The district for the people who hired the office.

What a day is like

There is no single Tuesday. In Washington: a visitor from Lakeland and a visitor from Osceola. In the district: a Polk desk and an Osceola desk.

The staff is the office. A serious Member is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy.

Place snapshot (verify official sources)

  • State: Florida · Seat: District 18 of 28
  • On HB 1D (redrawn): primarily Polk + part of Osceola
  • DeSoto / Hardee / Highlands / Glades / Okeechobee / Hendry left.

Orientation adapted from public congressional-district descriptions and Florida official election sources for education. The map and the Member of record are whatever the Division of Elections and House.gov say today.

What this is not

  • Not a U.S. Senator (statewide, six-year term).
  • Not the Governor.
  • Not a county commission, or a mayor.
  • Not a campaign flyer. This page does not tell anyone who to vote for.
