What this office is

A United States Representative is a federal legislator elected from one congressional district. Florida’s 17th is one of the state’s 28 House seats. The term is two years. The whole House stands for election every even-numbered year.

This page is Side One: inform, educate, inspire. It is not the race, not legal advice, and not an official government notice. For the 2026 cycle, use the election twin.

Confirm the current Member and the official map on House.gov — Find your Representative and the Clerk of the House.

How the job fits this community

Florida’s congressional map for the 2026 ballot is HB 1D, signed 4 May 2026. The 1st through 7th were not redrawn. This seat moved. Litigation is pending. Unless a court says otherwise, HB 1D is the map. Confirm on the Division of Elections and voter lookup. Look up the address.

The 17th is redrawn. It used to hold all of Sarasota and all of Charlotte, plus northern Lee. About 48,000 inland Sarasota voters left — they are the 16th. The seat takes more of Fort Myers in Lee. Sarasota County is split again (16th and 17th), the way it was before 2022. Confirm on Sarasota Votes.

Federal work here is a Gulf-coast inbox and a new Fort Myers inbox. Coastal Sarasota and Charlotte file the remaining core. Inland Sarasota files another office. Fort Myers files an east-Lee city the 19th used to carry. Staff who still treat all of Sarasota as this seat are on the 2022 map.

The Representative is the human hinge between this coastal-Sarasota-and-Fort-Myers map and Washington.

What the job entails

  • Legislate. Introduce and cosponsor bills. Sit on committees. Vote.
  • The purse. The House originates revenue bills. Appropriations decide what actually gets built or staffed.
  • Oversight. Hearings and letters that watch the executive branch.
  • Casework. SSA, VA, IRS, USCIS, military records, passports.
  • District presence. Town halls, city halls, employers, schools — the district is the employer.
  • Two homes. Washington for votes and committees. The district for the people who hired the office.

What a day is like

There is no single Tuesday. In Washington: a visitor from Sarasota and a visitor from Fort Myers. In the district: a Sarasota desk and a Lee desk.

The staff is the office. A serious Member is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy.

Orientation adapted from public congressional-district descriptions and Florida official election sources for education. The map and the Member of record are whatever the Division of Elections and House.gov say today.

What this is not

  • Not a U.S. Senator (statewide, six-year term).
  • Not the Governor.
  • Not a county commission, or a mayor.
  • Not a campaign flyer. This page does not tell anyone who to vote for.
