What this office is

A United States Representative is a federal legislator elected from one congressional district. California’s 5th is one of the state’s 52 House seats. The term is two years. The whole House stands for election every even-numbered year.

This page is Side One: inform, educate, inspire. It is not the race, not legal advice, and not an official government notice. For the 2026 cycle, use the election twin.

Confirm the current Member and the official map on House.gov — Find your Representative and the Clerk of the House.

How the job fits this community

California’s congressional map for the 2026 ballot is Proposition 50 (AB 604), adopted by voters on 4 November 2025. The U.S. Supreme Court allowed the map in February 2026. Unless a later order says otherwise, Proposition 50 is the map — not the 2021 Citizens Redistricting Commission lines. Confirm on the California Secretary of State and the voter-status lookup. Look up the address.

The 5th is still Gold Country and the central Sierra: Modesto (most of it), Oakdale, Sonora, Jackson, Yosemite, Mariposa, and a northern Fresno slice. Proposition 50 added the eastern desert the old 3rd used to hold — Inyo, Mono, and Alpine, including Death Valley and Mammoth Lakes. El Dorado Hills and Placerville left — they are the 7th. Confirm the address.

Federal work here is a valley inbox and a Sierra-and-desert inbox. Modesto files the city. Sonora files the foothills. Death Valley files a park and a county that used to be numbered 3. Staff who still file El Dorado Hills here, or who treat Bishop as the 3rd, are on the 2021 map.

The Representative is the human hinge between this Gold-Country-to-Death-Valley map and Washington.

What the job entails

  • Legislate. Introduce and cosponsor bills. Sit on committees. Vote.
  • The purse. The House originates revenue bills. Appropriations decide what actually gets built or staffed.
  • Oversight. Hearings and letters that watch the executive branch.
  • Casework. SSA, VA, IRS, USCIS, military records, passports.
  • District presence. Town halls, city halls, employers, schools — the district is the employer.
  • Two homes. Washington for votes and committees. The district for the people who hired the office.

What a day is like

There is no single Tuesday. In Washington: a visitor from Modesto and a visitor from Bishop. In the district: a Stanislaus desk and an Inyo desk.

The staff is the office. A serious Member is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy.

Place snapshot (verify official sources)

  • State: California · Seat: District 5 of 52
  • On Proposition 50: Modesto / Oakdale / Sonora / Yosemite / Death Valley / Mammoth Lakes
  • El Dorado Hills and Placerville are the 7th.

Orientation adapted from public congressional-district descriptions and California official election sources for education. The map and the Member of record are whatever the Secretary of State and House.gov say today.

What this is not

  • Not a U.S. Senator (statewide, six-year term).
  • Not the Governor.
  • Not a county commission, or a mayor.
  • Not a campaign flyer. This page does not tell anyone who to vote for.
