What this office is
A United States Representative is a federal legislator elected from one congressional district. California’s 47th is one of the state’s 52 House seats. The term is two years. The whole House stands for election every even-numbered year.
This page is Side One: inform, educate, inspire. It is not the race, not legal advice, and not an official government notice. For the 2026 cycle, use the election twin.

How the job fits this community
California’s congressional map for the 2026 ballot is Proposition 50 (AB 604), adopted by voters on 4 November 2025. The U.S. Supreme Court allowed the map in February 2026. Unless a later order says otherwise, Proposition 50 is the map — not the 2021 Citizens Redistricting Commission lines. Confirm on the California Secretary of State and the voter-status lookup. Look up the address.
The 47th is south-central Orange: all of Irvine, Tustin, Lake Forest, Aliso Viejo, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Hills, Laguna Beach, Laguna Woods, and Dana Point. Mission Viejo is mostly the 40th. Newport Beach is mostly the 42nd. Confirm the address.
Federal work here is an Irvine inbox and a Laguna inbox. Tustin and Lake Forest file the inland south. Staff who treat all of Mission Viejo or all of Newport Beach as this seat are on the wrong number.
The Representative is the human hinge between this Irvine-and-Laguna map and Washington.
What the job entails
- Legislate. Introduce and cosponsor bills. Sit on committees. Vote.
- The purse. The House originates revenue bills. Appropriations decide what actually gets built or staffed.
- Oversight. Hearings and letters that watch the executive branch.
- Casework. SSA, VA, IRS, USCIS, military records, passports.
- District presence. Town halls, city halls, employers, schools — the district is the employer.
- Two homes. Washington for votes and committees. The district for the people who hired the office.
What a day is like
There is no single Tuesday. In Washington: a visitor from Irvine and a visitor from Laguna Niguel. In the district: an Orange desk.
The staff is the office. A serious Member is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy.
