What this office is

A United States Representative is a federal legislator elected from one congressional district. California’s 1st is one of the state’s 52 House seats. The term is two years. The whole House stands for election every even-numbered year.

This page is Side One: inform, educate, inspire. It is not the race, not legal advice, and not an official government notice. For the 2026 cycle, use the election twin.

Confirm the current Member and the official map on House.gov — Find your Representative and the Clerk of the House.

How the job fits this community

California’s congressional map for the 2026 ballot is Proposition 50 (AB 604), adopted by voters on 4 November 2025. The U.S. Supreme Court allowed the map in February 2026. Unless a later order says otherwise, Proposition 50 is the map — not the 2021 Citizens Redistricting Commission lines. Confirm on the California Secretary of State and the voter-status lookup. Look up the address.

A June 2026 special to finish the current term used the pre-Proposition 50 1st. The November 2026 regular election uses this map. Do not mix the two.

The 1st now pairs Chico with Santa Rosa. Butte, Glenn, Tehama, Lassen, Plumas, and Sierra stay. Lake and a Mendocino slice came in. Redding left. Yuba City left. Yreka left. Confirm the address.

Federal work here is a two-city inbox that did not exist on the 2021 map. Santa Rosa files the population hinge. Chico files the Sacramento-Valley city. Susanville and Quincy file the east. Staff who still file Redding or Yuba City here are on the commission map.

The Representative is the human hinge between this Chico-and-Santa-Rosa map and Washington.

What the job entails

  • Legislate. Introduce and cosponsor bills. Sit on committees. Vote.
  • The purse. The House originates revenue bills. Appropriations decide what actually gets built or staffed.
  • Oversight. Hearings and letters that watch the executive branch.
  • Casework. SSA, VA, IRS, USCIS, military records, passports.
  • District presence. Town halls, city halls, employers, schools — the district is the employer.
  • Two homes. Washington for votes and committees. The district for the people who hired the office.

What a day is like

There is no single Tuesday. In Washington: a visitor from Santa Rosa and a visitor from Chico. In the district: a Sonoma desk and a Butte desk.

The staff is the office. A serious Member is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy.

  • Redding is the 2nd. Yuba City is the 4th.

Orientation adapted from public congressional-district descriptions and California official election sources for education. The map and the Member of record are whatever the Secretary of State and House.gov say today.

What this is not

  • Not a U.S. Senator (statewide, six-year term).
  • Not the Governor.
  • Not a county commission, or a mayor.
  • Not a campaign flyer. This page does not tell anyone who to vote for.
