When twenty of forty stand

- California held its statewide direct primary 2 June 2026.
- Twenty of forty State Senate seats stand: the even-numbered districts (2 through 40). Odd-numbered districts sit in 2028. Do not invent a 2026 race for District 1, 3, 5, or any odd number.

This is a regular State Senate election for this class. It is not a U.S. Senate race. California has no Class II and no 2026 U.S. Senate contest. Do not mix those desks. It is not the Governor race, though California’s Governor is also on 2026. It is not the State Assembly — that is all eighty seats, a different chamber, on the same Tuesday.
Do not transplant Alabama’s all-up Senate. Do not transplant Alaska’s letters. Do not transplant Arizona’s two-year all-thirty.
Congressional lines are a different map. A statewide measure that redraws U.S. House districts does not, by itself, rewrite State Senate districts. Confirm the Senate map on the Citizens Redistricting Commission and the Secretary of State.

The top-two primary already ran. The November card carries the two highest vote-getters, regardless of party. Confirm that pair on .gov, not on a comment.
Hiring a four-year desk in Sacramento
You are hiring twenty State Senators for California this cycle — four years, the upper house of state law, advice and consent that is not federal, a full-time session in a capital that is not the coast, a district that is not the whole state. Read the chamber page before you read a mailer. This is not a U.S. Senate seat, not a Governor, and not a Mayor.
Winners take office the first Monday in December 2026. That is California’s clock. Confirm Article IV and senate.ca.gov.
A complaint is a paper, not a thread
A resident who was mistreated by a state agency, a confirmation that went sideways, or a district office that would not answer files on official doors: the Senator’s district office, the committee of jurisdiction, the Fair Political Practices Commission where that statute actually reaches, the courts, and — for election process — the Secretary of State and the county elections official. A Facebook thread is not a grievance.
Professional standards for a state employee sit with that agency and with the law the Senate actually wrote. The Attorney General is the state’s lawyer. The Senate is not that complaint box. Send people to senate.ca.gov and sos.ca.gov/elections.
Fire, flood, and a levee year
Relief this chamber actually votes is a statute and an appropriation. A fire year in the foothills, an atmospheric river on the valley rivers, a levee night in the Delta, a drought year on the State Water Project — mutual aid and emergency years still run through the Governor’s desk first. The Senate’s hour is the bill that funds the year after, the oversight that asks whether the money moved, and the water or hospital statute that was already on the calendar.
Imperial is California. It is not Baja. Tahoe on this side of the line is California. It is not Nevada. Mutual aid with an Oregon or Arizona county is real. Those counties do not vote in this chamber.
Top-two and the December oath
Due process on this hire: a top-two primary, a general on 3 November 2026, a special if the Governor actually called one. California does not run a closed party primary for this desk. Vote-by-mail is ordinary here; deadlines and the official ballot still belong on the Secretary of State and the county elections official. Do not teach a shortcut.
A vacancy after this election is still a special. A map fight is a Commission file and a court clock. Do not transplant another state’s all-up Senate onto California. Twenty even-numbered districts are this cycle. Twenty odd-numbered sit until 2028.
The Constitution does not pause because the Legislature is full-time. Equal protection does not pause because a district is rural, desert, mountain, or inland.
Rights on fifty-eight counties
Counsel. Property. Peaceable assembly on the Capitol Mall and in a Sierra precinct. Equal protection in fifty-eight counties. The right to a sample ballot that matches what the card actually shows.
This chamber writes state law that can touch a license, a tax, a school, a prison, a levee, a water right, and a vote. It must not treat Los Angeles as the capital, San Francisco as the state, the coast as the whole map, or a U.S. Senate race as this desk. It must not crown itself.
Sacramento is the capital. The people of the district hire the seat. The Secretary of State is the door.
