Sheriff Election — Franklin County, Massachusetts

Franklin Sheriff · the arena · the rural west hires this desk · 2026 is the exception · 2028 is still the table
This is Side Two
This page is the arena for this office, this cycle. Unique teaching for the job lives on the office twin. The county as a place — first abolished, Greenfield, rural west — is taught at Franklin County.
It is not a campaign. Names belong on the official sample ballot. No crown.
Two clocks — say both
Massachusetts sheriffs sit for six years. The Secretary of the Commonwealth lists Sheriff elections in 2028, 2034, 2040. Takes office the first Wednesday in January. All fourteen last stood in a regular cycle in 2022.
Franklin is the exception. A vacancy in 2025 put an interim Sheriff in the chair by gubernatorial appointment. Confirm the current officer of record on Mass.gov’s sheriffs list and the official Franklin County Sheriff’s Office site. The SOS 2026 Candidates Guide lists Sheriff (Franklin County) under Vacancies. That 2026 primary and general finish the remainder of the term that began after 2022. The winner does not reset the Commonwealth table. 2028 is still the next regular six-year hiring for Franklin, same as the other thirteen.
Do not teach 2026 as the normal sheriff year for Massachusetts. Do not hide this vacancy. Do not invent 2026 sheriff races in Barnstable, Berkshire, Bristol, or the rest.
Confirm both dates on the Secretary of the Commonwealth and the 2026 Candidates Guide.
Sample ballot wins
Do not take names from a news comment or a Greenfield thread.
- Official candidate list / sample ballot — Secretary of the Commonwealth
- Voter status
- Current Sheriff of record (including any interim) — official Franklin County Sheriff’s Office / Mass.gov sheriffs list
- City and town clerks on this map — Greenfield, Deerfield, Montague, Orange, and the hill towns — for local filing questions
If a site and the official sample ballot disagree, the sample ballot wins.
What you are hiring
You are hiring the Sheriff of Franklin County — jail and house of correction at 160 Elm Street, Greenfield, court transport and security, civil process — for the rural northern Pioneer Valley. In 2026 you are hiring someone to finish a term. In 2028 you will hire for a full six years. You are not hiring Greenfield Police. You are not hiring the Hampshire County Sheriff. You are not hiring a county commissioner; this county does not elect one. Read the office page first.
Rights, remedy, relief, service, due process
Humane custody. Honest papers. Honest night count. An interim chair does not shrink the Constitution. Remedy for a jail wrong is the office’s official complaint door and the courts. Relief in a Mohawk Trail blizzard is this count first. Service of process is a person at a door in Heath. Due process does not pause because 2026 is a vacancy year. Equal protection from the Vermont line to the Quabbin towns. Athol is not this electorate.
