The valley hires on a four-year February clock
Vermont sheriffs sit four years (Chapter II, § 50). The term commences 1 February next after the election. The last regular cycle was 2022. The Secretary of State lists Sheriff among offices to be elected in 2026. Primary Tuesday, 11 August 2026. General Tuesday, 3 November 2026. Next take-office date after a regular 2026 win: 1 February 2027.
Do not confuse the Governor. Vermont’s Governor is two years and is on the 2026 ballot. That is a different desk. High Bailiff is two years. Assistant judges and State’s Attorney share the four-year county chapter — still not this hire. Do not skip 2026 because someone remembered a two-year statewide race.
County-office petitions: 100 signatures, major-party filing with the county clerk (independents with the Secretary of State). Confirm on the SOS candidates page.
Vermont mails a general-election ballot to every qualified voter by October 1. Check the mail date on the Vermont Voter Portal. Bring the ballot if you vote in person; if you forget it, you still vote after an affidavit. Polls close 7 p.m.
