What this office is
The Mayor of Augusta is elected at-large by the people of this city. Augusta’s charter is a council–manager form with an elected Mayor: eight Council members set policy with the Mayor; a City Manager runs the day-to-day, including police and fire as the Public Safety Director. The Mayor is the city’s elected executive hinge — votes on Council only to break a tie, unless the charter says otherwise, and appoints board and commission members for Council confirmation. That is a clock on this city, not a slight.
The term is three years. No person may be elected Mayor for more than three consecutive three-year terms (a short initial term of 18 months or less does not burn the three).
