This is not a mayor. Lincoln is the capital, under the tower. Omaha is the largest city. That does not make Omaha the map. The Sandhills, the Panhandle, the Platte towns, and the farm counties hire the same Governor.

How the job fits this community

The inbox is a state inbox: a capital file from the tower that is not an Omaha skyline, a Sandhills cattle year that never makes a national broadcast, a Panhandle drought, a Platte-water file, and a winter that is not a downtown press conference.

People here meet the state government as Medicaid, a state hospital or prison, a driver license, a National Guard year, ice on a two-lane, a unicameral bill, and a farm year that is not a mayor’s desk. The state budget. Propose, bargain, and live with what the Unicameral passes. This is not a federal appropriations bill.
Appoint. Boards, some judges, agency heads — whatever this constitution actually gives.
Commander of the Nebraska National Guard when the Guard is in state status.
Clemency where Nebraska law gives it.
Disaster years. Drought, ice, flood, a hard freeze on cattle ground — the desk that is not a mayor and not a Senator.
Two homes. Lincoln for the job. The rest of the state for the people who hired the office.

What a day is like

There is no single Tuesday. In the capital: a visitor from Lancaster County and a visitor whose drive started in Scottsbluff, a Sandhills county that is not on I-80 news, or a plant that is not Nebraska’s 3rd House district. In the state: a capitol desk, a cattle day, and a Panhandle day that is not Omaha.

The staff is the office. A serious Governor is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy.
