Virginia elects a Governor in the odd year after a presidential year. Last regular: Tuesday, 4 November 2025. Next regular: Tuesday, 6 November 2029. Official source: Virginia Department of Elections — Schedule of General Elections 2026–2030 (November 6: Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General). Do not invent a 2027 Governor race. The House of Delegates and the Senate are 2027. This desk is not.
When ninety-five counties and independent cities actually vote
- Last regular general: Tuesday, 4 November 2025. That hire is the current term.
- Next regular general: Tuesday, 6 November 2029. Confirm leftover primary (if held: June 2029 on the local calendars) and filing dates on elections.virginia.gov when the 2029 deadline calendar is posted. Do not invent a primary Tuesday the Department has not posted.
- 2027 on this map: House of Delegates (all 100) and Senate of Virginia (all 40) — not this Governor.
- 2026 on this map: U.S. House and Class II U.S. Senate — not this Governor. Delegates specials, if a writ actually posted, are remainders, not this office.
This is the next regular gubernatorial election. It is not a U.S. Senate race. It is not a 2027 Delegates flyer with the title swapped.
Winners take office the Saturday after the second Wednesday in January next succeeding (Article V, Section 1 — January 2030 after 2029). Confirm the live Saturday.
The Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General stand the same 2029 day. They are still not this desk. They are not a joint ticket.

If a site and the official sample ballot disagree, the sample ballot wins. If the 2027 sample ballot has no Governor line, there is no Governor race that year. Article V, Section 1 makes the incumbent ineligible for the term next succeeding. That is a clock. It is not a crown for the next name.
A complaint against this desk is not a Richmond mayor file
A resident who was mistreated by a state agency, a license that never moved, or a cabinet that would not answer files on official doors: the Governor’s office, the department of jurisdiction, the Attorney General (a different 2029 hire), the courts, and — for election process — the Department of Elections and the general registrar. A Facebook thread is not a grievance.
Richmond’s mayor is a different office (Mayor of Richmond). Norfolk’s mayor is not this desk. Do not file a state executive grievance at city hall.
Impeachment, when it is actually this constitution’s file, is articles in the House of Delegates and a Senate trial — not a comment.
After a James flood and an Eastern Shore storm
Relief this office actually runs is a declaration and a Guard call-up in state status. A James flood at the fall line, an Eastern Shore hurricane, a Hampton Roads surge, a Southwest freeze, ice on I-81 — mutual aid with North Carolina, West Virginia, Maryland, and Tennessee is real. Those states do not vote for this Governor. The District of Columbia does not vote for this Governor.
The General Assembly’s hour is the statute and the appropriation. The Governor’s hour is the night the river or the Shore is the job. Read the office page before you read a mailer.
Papers, the Guard, the night shift on counties and independent cities
You are hiring the Governor of Virginia for the whole Commonwealth — four years, one executive, ninety-five counties plus independent cities. Papers a resident actually needs: a status on a cabinet file, a clemency process that is not a rumor, a disaster question that is not a mayor’s. Independent cities are not counties on this map. The night shift is that whole map, not one harbor.
The staff is the office. A serious Governor is a serious principal: clear priorities, honest casework, no rumor as policy. Capitol Square is the job. The rest of the Commonwealth is the hire.
Last regular hire 4 November 2025; next 6 November 2029 — not 2027
Due process on this hire: there is no Governor primary in 2026 or 2027. Next regular class is 6 November 2029. Confirm the 2029 primary (if held), filing, mail, and absentee on the Department of Elections when that calendar is posted. Do not teach a shortcut. Do not transplant Kentucky’s 2027 clock onto Richmond. Do not transplant New Jersey’s joint ticket onto Article V.
The Constitution does not pause because 2027 is a Delegates year. Equal protection does not pause because a county is rural. Norfolk does not become the capital because a mailer said so.
No consecutive term; names live on elections.virginia.gov
Petition. Property. Peaceable assembly on Capitol Square and in an Eastern Shore precinct. Equal protection in ninety-five counties, independent cities, and one Commonwealth. The right to a sample ballot that matches what the envelope actually holds — including the right to see no Governor line in 2027.
This office executes state law that can touch a license, a tax, a school, a prison, a river, a road, and a vote. It must not treat Norfolk as the capital, Richmond as the whole James, Arlington as the Commonwealth, or a U.S. Senate race as this desk. It must not crown itself.
Richmond is the capital. The people of the Commonwealth hire the office. The Department of Elections is the door.
